I had an interesting experience over the weekend and just wanted to chat about it. At work I had seen and ad on Gumtree for an "Old Rolex Oyster Milgauss Model 6541" the description is as follows. "This is grandpa's Rolex given to me about 20 years ago. It was forgotten and has been in the draw, however recently found. I have had a watch maker confirm it's real and model 6541 (Rolex book) and 1958. The watch needs new face and was gold Rolex do have parts for these watch. The watch maker quoted $990 to get it service. Currently not running correctly and losing 30 minutes plus per day. I am open to offers and would like it to go to good home." The seller had priced the watch at $2500, and well by the time I had messaged him to ask for photo's and a bit more information (as i was deeply suspicious ), he had received an offer from a dealer for 30,000 later in the day replying saying that he had finally sold the watch for 70,000AUD - box and papers the whole shebang. I'm guessing he had no idea the value of what he actually had, and I congratulated him on selling the watch for a large sum. I'm not even sure what these are supposed to go for? The next day he messaged me saying he had another watch - a vintage rolex diver. Again intrigued I asked for photo graphs. It may have been a nice submariner I could have put an offer in on. Well these are what he sent. I was gobsmacked. I am no comex expert, in regards to authenticity, but I could easily google to find the potential value of this piece if legitimate. WAY out of my league. I replied to say that he had a very rare piece, and then learned he had ANOTHER COMEX saying "I have two Comex Rolex but the other one is a 200m=660ft." Later the gentleman replied saying he had the box, papers and diving records for both and the dealer who bought the Milgauss would be looking at the watches later this week. I again thanked him for entertaining my curiosity and congratulated him on the very rare watches he had in his possession, lamenting that these special watches were very unattainable (well to me anyway!) Anyway theres my story hope you enjoy the photos! Cheers, Edwin.
I think the owner wised up after getting such interest for the Milgauss. I don't know if i could let myself purchase one at the price knowing how much they can be worth :S
Wow good old gumtree I bought this a few years ago off gumtree Mk1 Lv so there is some genuine pieces among all the fake watches on gumtree!
Wow. Would love to see pictures of this and hear the story of the guy who owned it. He knew how to pick a watch .
First, I have to learn to trust Gumtree a little more, after all this is where my 5513 came from. This is the first I have heard of this, but I intend to find out more. Will keep you updated. J My Gumtree 5513
This caught my eye because I lived in Perth for 3 years and used to scour Gumtree... what a lucky dude!
