Really nice bezel and 1039/516 bracelet. Appears to be a nice dial too BUT it's was sold for parts or repair. Can't tell about the hands. No movement or inside caseback pic. Crown and stem are broken. May not lock down. And the crystal is severely cracked (from diving pressure perhaps??). Big bucks for sure and work needs to be done.

I was keeping an eye on that until it went quite high this morning. I thought it may have been a bargain, I didn't expect it to go so high. Behind that crazed crystal looks a really nice dial and hand set. 1038/516 looks good too. Main thing that stopped me taking a chance, as you stated, there was no movement shots.
I would really like to see how this one turns out. If it turns out to be a beauty I can then go and curl up in the corner and cry, wondering why I didn't bid. Good luck!

I was watching this one like a hawk. I even bid last night. The winning bidder has no feedback or history and I'd bet my whole watch collection that this baby will be back up for sale within the next week. The price may have even been drived up by a shill bidder.

Oh wow, I must have misunderstood. I guess now not only do I feel stupid, but I'm also thankful no one took me up on my offer to bet my whole watch collection. ::shy::

Some minor repair and service should be able to rejuvenate the beautiful diver. The shell of the piece is very nice. I would be buying it if I am a watchmaker.

Won by less than a bid increment. Looks like the second highest bidder is either a shill at 100% efficiency or a dummy who chickened out with almost 15' left. ;)

The second bidder wouldn't have known the top end of the limit set by the winning bidder though.

The top in this case was the winning bid which was exposed when the amount of $6000 was bid.

My major concern would be that the original crown was lost underwater, the case got flooded and the movement is a seized up rusted hulk. However the seconds hands are running, if nothing else, so the movement can´t be all that bad. I think it with a little TLC it will scrub up extremely well

Why would he need another one?

I mean, how many watches of one model can a person collect?

    Oh, hang on.

    Belay that comment.

No way the dial can look so good with a water intrusion destroying the movement.

That BT will renovate nicely. Congrats @gemini4 to a very good purchase, I´m sure of!

I believe my thread has been misunderstood.

I did not even bid on it. I was interested in it. But not anywhere near this final price in this condition. Too many question marks.

Furthermore, I would not have initiated this thread, questioning the value, if I was the winner. I may be a very active buyer/collector/hoarder/investor but I have always been honest in my posts on OF.

It was. How else would you think he won by less than the minimum bid increment of $100?

More importantly (to me) :whistling: you posted after the bidding

and while I tracked it, wasn't looking to add a reference I have already. Was tempting though :)

Even if the movement was a rusted up hulk, that is the easiest part of a watch like this to replace or repair. I think with a sympathetic service, new crystal, new case tube and crown, it will come up nicely.

    Cheers, Al

I was watching it too, but I have the same model in better condition so I was not really interested.
I'm sure it will be very nice after a good service and a new crystal.
