This is a great little web-based essay - he starts with a spring and a gear train and works up to a full mechanism with automatic winding and calendar complication!

Meat and potatoes for many here, but I thought it was illustrated and described really well - all using quite clean, readable WebGL too (https://ciechanow.ski/js/watch.js), quite impressive.
