I don't know how often Van Gogh comes up for auction, but I'm guessing this will go for far above the estimate.

Nature Morte: Vase Aux Glaïeuls
Estimate: 70,000,000 - 100,000,000 HKD
(8,991,570 - 12,845,100 USD)

oil on canvas
signed Vincent (lower right)
executed in the summer of 1886
51.2 by 38.8 cm; 20 ⅛ by 15 ⅜ in.

The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.

I can buy a Van Gogh, but can’t get a fυcking Rolex.
Sure you can, you can get any Roles BNIB delivered to your front door tomorrow, but you have to pay the market price and not the fictitious price Rolex puts on the watch.

Yup- totally tragic. A little bit of 21st century pharmacology and it makes you wonder if he could have had a slightly “normal” life, or if that would have totally killed his ability to see the world as he did.

Funny thing is, I live like 10 minutes from the Van Gogh museum and I've only been there one or two times.

I assume they have a pretty finite collection aside of a few privately held pieces that wander in and out…not sure how often I would think the collection changes.

Far from his best work.
Still, the work of an exceptionality talented human being. And it provokes quite a bit of emotion for a "nature morte". My wife's eyes widened in wonder at the sight of the picture above.

If you can buy the Van Gogh (which sells far above the original retail price by the way) you can buy any fu🤬ing Rolex you want. 🙄

My wife and I were talking about trips we'd like to take when covid allows us to travel again. She said she'd like to go back to Amsterdam just to visit the Van Gogh museum again.

You are fortunate. That is a fabulous museum.

I agree with your comments.
We see the evolution of his style in this transitional work between The Potatoe Eaters and his absolutely amazing later works.

We have a decent little art museum in my crappy state. A couple years ago they had a Van Gogh on loan for a limited time. That does not happen often. Three weeks in a row I went down and stared at that piece for two hours each time. My wife thought I was nuts but I can not get over his works. So many were lost. His brother did his best to collect many he paid off bar tabs or just gave away. If I were one of those humans in the 1% I would buy this in a heart beat. These works usually outperform the SandP but it’s not about the money, it’s an indescribable beauty. My wife does not like going to art museums with me I told Her now she knows how I feel when I take her shopping for three hours and she comes out with one pair of socks.

Ditto.

Given how rarely Van Gogh comes to auction (my assumption, I haven’t actually done the googling) but especially how nuts the markets have been, I’ll speculate this work goes >$60m, and I have a hunch I’m hilariously under.

Not often do we get to see art like this close up. We either see it in a gallery setting at distance or in books/catalog/online.
I was lucky enough to document a historic house in CT many years ago that had both winter and summer haystacks by Monet. I was using hot lights (1k watt tungsten lights) to light the space and the curatorial staff an I marveled at what those haystacks looked like with that much light- so many colors in each haystack, incredibly tight brush strokes-truly amazing. Being able to be close enough to almost lick the impasto gave me a real understanding of how Monet saw the world. I’m sure being that close to Vincent’s work would be the same.
