Pretty sure he meant "Oh Bollocks" because it's one more that he has to get to complete his collection ;-)

Well, there won't be joy anymore if the pain stops.

I am not entirely sure that there is a legal way to own a -78 Star case/radial dial

The Davidoffs sold a radial dial before (with an unknown mid-case), so presumably a Star (non-NASA) case could be found if you look hard enough. ;)

Well as far as I know I think they were all built for NASA, so each time one comes up the legal piranas surface, leaving the whales floundering.

So you've completed your 861 set? I know the 80's and 90's aren't considered that interesting Speedmaster-wise but did you ever notice that on that 60th Anniversary poster put out by Omega there are five watches from the 80's and eleven (the most of any era) from the 90's? Of course, a lot of LE's show up there; but, it doesn't include the movement variations: 17 jewels/copper (late 80's), 17 jewels/gold (90's), 18 jewels/gold but says 17, 18 jewels/gold says 18. Then there's last of the tritium, first super luminova, five bracelets, PIC code variations (late 80's), and Ref code variations (145.0022, 345.0022). Of course, there's the first 1861 in that 90's vintage too. There's a lot to keep you busy hunting there; but, you'll need a bigger box!

Here's a side question: Anybody have any idea why the 1861's didn't start with the gold 18 jewel movements? Why wait for Rhodium plating? An 18th jewel seems like a more significant change than a plating change.

You can console yourself that those are basically unobtainium. Makes an Ultraman look as common as a Transitional.
