1973 Speedmaster sold today with what looks like service replacement hands - £4300 hammer price + 22% buyers fees so £5,250. With box and papers and bracelet.

A quick check of Speedmaster 101 price chart has fair to good prices for this ref around 3500-500 USD. Current conversion puts this at $6500. Admittedly this has provenance and one family ownership, so perhaps falls into Excellent.

I think the clear provenance probably did help as well.

That was actually a great deal. $6,500 including a 1039 and I can see at least one end link.

How much extra did they charge for the cheese around that bezel?🤮
I get leaving it “as-is” for the buyer to determine how to proceed, but a damp paper towel maybe??!

I don't like the hands, and I think there is lume missing from some of the markers. What the hell is that crown? It a SW, but just the normal common kind, not Apollo XI.

It's not for me.

The original hands, crown, pushers etc all appear to be included in the service bag.

I'm no expert, but that looks far from 'excellent' to me.

"excellence" in this instance is in the eye of the beholder...

Maybe, but I was thinking about it from my understanding of the Speedmaster 101 pricing chart.

I understand, but there's always some subjectivity built into the equation.

It may be very nice when cleaned up, then again it might not. Papers do not in isolation make an average watch excellent. That said, it does look promising.

I think also with the lockdown restrictions you are making a purchase from some poor res photos. I've noticed this still doesn't seem to put people off.

could be lockdown cabin fever?
As previously commented by someone on another post, there are more 'eyes on' with online auctions with lockdown, which may be pushing up prices.

Interesting replies -sounds like quite a few of you think this has potential then, quite apart from the paperwork and provenance.

Small detail, but I think buyers fee @ 22% is direct through the auction house (either a commissioned bid or this one is one of the best with a 'live' facility - not many have) If you use the saleroom portal you are at @25.94%. Sorry, not trying to nit-pick, just trying to highlight how hammer prices can quickly balloon!

It's stating the obvious but nonetheless refreshing to read some down-to-earth honesty in a description - "basically the watch is filthy".

Some one got bamboozled out of a large amount of money that watch is beat to hell. I know prices went up but about 10 years ago I got a 1972 speedy at the NAWCC Pasadena reginal for 1400 buck the seller had about 8-10 vintage speedmasters for sell one guy before me bought 3-4 of them was lucky he had one left. But prices on vintage watches have gotten insane. And mine did not look beat to hell. And today I think 1400 that I paid was and still is a large amount of money now 6500 crazy but maybe I think that way because I remember buying a new truck for that price in the 1980's guess us old timers think different about money.

$800 for my ‘72 in 2002 and it was freshly serviced and in great shape from a collector, not some garage sale find...that was market rate- I’m right there with you. $6k+ for one of these is just insane to me....and I used to walk to school, uphill- both ways.
