For me the dial and bezel have a "dryness" to them. Otherwise a fair to good watch, that will give good wear-ability.

However I thought it a bit strong, so I wonder if a sub £5,000 watch is finding stronger competition?

I think I have a problem with the greenish dial plots....... and the dial is marked from what I see.
Prices seems to go up!

 

That’s a very strong result for a mediocre example.

I haven’t been following these sales for a while but as a $5k watch. Wow!!

A year ago I’d pitch you’d be fortunate to find a buyer at $3k-3.5k.

I wonder if we’ll start to see more -78s come out in the $3-4K range now.

 

Seems a bit like an outlier to me to be honest. I would have expected this one between 2.7-3.2k as the tired dial ain’t great.

It's an ok example for me. Good for a daily wearer but unserviced and with that dial it should be around £3450.

Around £500 above market imo.

 

Like mentioned before, I would say outlier. If you do a "finished sold" auction search in eBay, most won't even be more than $3.5 and some -69 $4.5 and they are not even good watches.

 

My bet: dial.

 

The damage doesn't change position, even when the watch is tilted differently. Can't be the crystal.

 

I'm inclined to agree - I zoomed those images up a fair amount and also couldn't see the damage move dependent on position. Also, some potential oil marks close to the Omega logo? I see the same shape in two images.

With @Davidt s assessment above - looks like dial was the issue.

I am struggling to see why it went for that much. Then again vintage watch prices seem a bit all over the place at the moment with some nice watches going for less than they would have a year ago and then examples like this. I'm simply more confused than ever.

Hmm I agree it looks tired, but I could see people being drawn to it because it oozes vintage style without any clear damage or flaws. I'm attracted to the step dial and the ghosted (but very intact) bezel.

While I agree the price is really high, I could imagine people looking at a 71 in this condition as a good alternative to a 69 or even a 321?

 

The reason why this particular watch sold for less is that the listing had no description whatsoever.
Meaning, in case there is something wrong with the item, the buyer cannot claim "Not as described" since nothing was described...
It's whatever you see in the pictures. If you have a keen eye to assess the watch and take the risk with pretty much 0 safety net. Good for you. If not, move along.
So yeah, bottom line, a riskier deal = much lower price.
(I personally love eBay sales like this by the way...)
