Was there/is there such a thing? If so, I believe I found one, but not before I ask my friends;)

I think OP has found a 145.022-69 with a straight-writing caseback and a DON bezel.

@MikiJ what is the serial number of the movement? Keep in mind, replacement straight-writing casebacks do exist, so it could be that the caseback was replaced at some point. Make sure the caseback is marked 145.022-69.

IMO at the very least, either the bezel or caseback is not original to the watch; there could be further issues...

Is the serial correct for a straight writing case back? I have read posts about people switching case backs to commemorate the landing.

Way to many unknowns to be able to give a helpful answer.
Show us a photo of the back, inside back, and front of watch, serial and all the information will flow...

Thank you all for your prompt responses. I'm waiting for detailed scans of all the above. I must admit that the existing scan of the case-back looks unpolished/new :(

Before I wrote this post I contacted the store that listed this watch on their internet site. I requested scad of the inside of the case-back and a scan of the movement clearly showing the movement number. I was told they would send them to me, no problem!

Now 4 days later - No Cigar! What makes me think there's one too many zeros stamped on the inside of the case-back::facepalm2::

A good condition DON bezel is worth a considerable sum... even if incorrect, it could still be a good pickup at the right price??

I have subsequently found another straight wring 145.022-69 That includes a Letter from The Archives.
The letter matches the serial # on the movement (31.627.440) and shows a date of manufacture 08-24-71.
I've read where these '69 dated case-back were used on almost all if not most of these straight writing Speedmasters. Your thoughts?

BTW: This is the ad that got me interested in the DON version. Me thinks that DON bezel or not it's over priced.

All straight-writing casebacks were marked 145.022-69, so no worries there. Are you sure it has a DON bezel? There weren't any photos in your post there.

Thanx for confirming that all straight line case backs were 145.022-69.

The ad I posted is not the straight line '69 I bought. Don't worry, I know the rules: Scans or it didn't happen ;)

I'll see if I can post the scans that were shown of the DON '69.

Ah OK yes. I did see the one you posted - it is overpriced, but WBAW is a very well-established dealer (so markup) plus 1175 bracelet (small markup) plus good condition. It wouldn't be a good buy now, but it might be considered cheap in a couple years.

I agree with all you say. However the case-back they show looks like a new replacement with one too many zeros. Maybe that's why they never sent me the scans they promised to send.

Could be, yeah, not sure. Best guess though is it's a regular pre-moon -69 that had a replacement caseback, since it has a 29M serial - straight writing should be in the 31M range.

Miki, for what it's worth, in my opinion the caseback is original.
The service casebacks have much bigger cut-outs for the opening tool and also have pointed top "A,s" as opposed to the flat top on the originals. I think it's most likely a re-painted but original 022 back.
How's the old girl holding up BTW?

Our old girl" held up so well they someone made me a Godfather like offer. That's why I'm chasing another Speedy :)
