How does one conclude the bracelet is aftermarket? If it’s a lack of engraving on the end links, that doesn’t make it aftermarket necessarily. It’s been documented that some 1675 GMTs were sold in the USA without markings on the endlinks. We haven’t seen the clasp either.

From what ive read red backed bezel inserts were used well into the 90's so if you sent your GMT to Rolex or where ever they would replace the insert with a non fat font red back hence they they were service red back insets

one on the left red back insert
one on the right blue back fat font insert

When I last posted, I thought the watch was still disassembled. Unfortunately, it was ready for retrieval the next day, so it's now impossible to take pics of the dial, bezel, and hands from all aspects. Here's an image of it on my pal West Coast Bill's wrist . . .

. . . in sunlight. Of course, the dial isn't grey irl, but this is the clearest image I've gotten so far with my iPhone. I'll take pics over the weekend with my macro lens under better lighting conditions.

    Thanks,

I'll take photos over the weekend, but I'm pretty sure the bracelet's a knock-off. I know the background story of this watch fairly well; for starters, it's not the bracelet that was on the watch when my brother-in-law first saw it three years ago. It was replaced by the previous owner who accommodated my brother-in-law's desire for a Jubilee.

To me, based on the on the wrist photo, it has good appeal. Looks like a Mark 6 late tritium service dial. Insert looks authentic with a nice light fade to it. Case does not look overpolished. I would estimate that a dealer would list for around $9.5k

Lots of good crowd-sourced info here. If the OP's relative does sell the watch, it would be fun for the OP to update the thread with the final selling price. Very hard to put an accurate value on a piece like this.

The difference shade of lume between dial and hands lowers the value in my opinion. Add the lack of a bracelet and I'm at 6k buy in. Not a dealer but certainly a buyer of GMT and Subs from this era.

I’d suspect youd have a rush of buyers at $6k. Slight differences in lume shades between hands and dial is common on correct Rolex trit watches.

I'll give the crown one more try tomorrow with a little more natural light. Any thoughts based on this set of photos?

(The current crystal is generic, just replaced by my watchmaker.)

Do you feel the bezel insert's original, as in 'made in 1967' original? Or is it a later service replacement?

I'm asking to make sure the listing description is accurate.

    Thanks,

With better photos, I'm liking the watch more and I agree that my previous $6k guesstimate was low. Overall, it's a nice-looking watch that someone will be happy to wear. Some parts are service, but still authentic and looking good.

So dial, hands, and insert are service items? That was my original opinion, glad to have it confirmed. I'm pretty sure the bracelet is bogus, not entirely sure about the clasp. Any thoughts?

sorry to hijack the thread for a generic question: in OP's first pic of the side profile. you can see the lug holes are very close to the edge of the lug. it's almost "along" the edge of the lug. i was recently hunting down a 5513 which also had these side profile. not in specific reference to OP's watch, but does this usually mean the case has been overly polished? or that that the case could be a replacement? many thanks.

The case has been polished in the past, but the serial number will confirm originality. The "bevel" (indentation) around the lug hole is also a typical signature of polishing using a buffing wheel. The holes will have sharp edges on an unpolished lug.
