Hello fellow obsessors, I'm getting married in September and plan to buy 2 watches. A Saxonia Thin 37mm in white gold and a Speedmaster. A classicly-designed dress watch and a classic sport watch. Since I'll wear during my wedding weekend my plan is to never sell them and eventually pass down to kids. I sold all my other random ETA and fashion watches a few years ago and have since been researching like a fiend and saving cash. Moving forward I only will buy quality, revered brands / movements, etc. That said, my local AD has a slot for me for a 60th Anniversary / CK2915 Speedy. So, I'm trying to decide whether to go for this LE or the standard Pro. I love the CK2915 detailed homage to the original as I never plan on spending that kind of cash for an actual vintage 2915 period piece. I doubt, at least. I like that the case is smaller. I'm not a huge fan of the colored SL but considering how close it is to the original I can deal. And the bracelet IMO is much simpler / better designed than on the 3570. Con being with tax it's $7,800 in SF. Ouch. I love the 3570.50. Feels like such a modern classic and appreciate how it's a representation of an evolved piece of watch history. From an AD it's 5k and from the gray market it's more like $3200. However it's 42mm and that's pushing it as far as case size for my taste. I realize I ultimately will make the call based on my own preferences, but am curious about y'all's opinion. I can always put down the deposit (which my AD is asking the full amount) and get reimbursed sometime in June / July when they start shipping if I want to return it / change my mind.
Go with your gut. Which one gives you the bigger kick? If you can't decide that way, I would go with the classic. Hard to go wrong with that.
IMHO the standard is a prettier watch. The LE is more a collectors piece. But they are both great go with what you want.
The answer is so obvious just get them both. In all seriousness I would go w the classic speedy. Can always get (maybe) the LE later on....
I'm a vintage guy, so the 60th is the obvious choice based on cosmetics. That aside, there is a vast difference in price between them, so unless you'll have to be in love with the 60th to pay more than 2x price!
3570.50. As u said it looks more modern. To me 42mm is a plus. The oversized arrow hands plus brown lume is a total no go for me in terms of the other watch. It really boils down to the one u like best--there is no one right answer but rather differing preferences.
A couple factors to consider: 1. Why do you like speedmasters? Is it the design, or the NASA history? If it's primarily the NASA history, get the standard speedy. If it's the design, get the one you like the look of better. 2. Do you like both enough to eventually own both? If so, the LE's availability will be an issue in the future, but the standard speedy is always around. They're both great watches and you can't really go wrong either way, but personally I don't think I'd have bought the LE if I didn't already own the classic moonwatch.
As your dress watch is 37mm and the 60th is nearly 39mm I think they complement each other better. Besides, if you have an allocation you are way ahead of many others. The standard Speedmaster Pro will be around forever and you can always get one of those.
Speedy Pro is my personal preference. I think the Saxonia would compliment either of the Omegas well. If the deposit on the LE is fully refundable, and you're truly on the fence, order the LE. Worst case, once it's on your wrist at the AD, you don't love it. Hand it back to them, grab the Pro, and be refunded the difference. This way you've secured the LE but can easily change your mind once the time comes.
I'd go for the LE. Worst case, you decide you don't like it, you can always flip it into a 3570.50. May be harder and more expensive to go the other way.
No brainer. Go with the 60th Anniversary '57 Speedy if you can still get your hands on it. I promise you that down the road you will regret not purchasing this watch. This is almost an exact replica of the original, produced in limited quantities by the original manufacturer. How often does this happen? Omega is giving you the very rare opportunity to go back in time. Few will get to experience this. You'll be able to pick up a new Speedy Pro anytime.
As a non-collector and more of an accumulator (who wears his watches) my instinct would be to go for the newest version with the latest movement. But what's really important is getting whichever watch appeals to you more. I think anything under 42mm in a Speedmaster would be a bit small, especially with the small dials on the face. I think the best option is to go to an AD and try a couple sizes on, see how you like it, how it fits your wrist size, etc. To summarize: 1. I like newer vs. collectible, but that's just me. 2. If you're going to wear your Speedy like I would, the only criteria that matters is your own preference. 3. Check one out in person.
