The Royal Australian Mint issued a 6-coin proof set to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing next year. Great that they did it but the designs look underwhelming, at least at the magnification of the images on the RAM website. In actual size hope they look better. Some designs elements might have been inspired by Omega's moonphase footprint and the DSOTM Apollo 8 dial. Have other countries started releasing 50th anniversary collectibles yet? https://eshop.ramint.gov.au/50th-Anniversary-of-the-Moon-Landing/10076.aspx
I picked up my proof set last week and very happy with it. No LE edition runs which would have been nice Cheers Michael
The Royal Australian Mint have released another Apollo XI 50th commemorative coin. This is a very nice looking piece IMO and unusual with its domed profile - see 3rd image. Limited edition of 750 in gold. Very tempting and it's not selling with a large uplift over gold bullion price (A$1,854.41). Sale price A$2795.00 for locals, A$2540.91 for overseas buyers. https://eshop.ramint.gov.au/50th-Anniversary-of-the-Lunar-Landing/10139.aspx
The US Mint have got a whole set of anniversary coins out too. https://catalog.usmint.gov/on/demandware.store/Sites-USM-Site/default/Search-Show?q=apollo 11
As an Aussie, I am interested in the Gold variant and luckily in a financial position to purchase a piece. Can anyone advise why it wouldn’t be wise to? Any forums with more info? Thank you for any info.
I bought the Silver Proof Dollar coin directly from the US Mint, $59.95 + shipping/tax. Nice presentation box. It's a curved coin similar to the baseball coin they did a few years ago. Mintage limit is 400,000 (across all options....proof, uncirculated, coin sets, etc). Worthwhile to have one, especially if one is getting the Apollo 11 watch, have plans to display it next to the watch when I'm not wearing it. From now on the US Mint's silver coins will be 99.9% silver instead of the older 90/10 composition. I bought the 2019 Australian Uncirculated coin set when I was in Melbourne in February, reasonably priced at A$25 (US$17.75 at the time), good value I think.
