I ran across these two videos. They're not going to be to everyone’s taste, but some of you will get a real kick out of them. First is a six year old video tour of an estate sale of somebody’s 40 year collection of 50’s cars, mostly parts cars I suppose. Like our watch collections, I’m sure every car there seemed like a good idea at the time. It made me sad for all us collectors, but I loved being able to spot all sorts of cool old Detroit iron. Second is a film of NASCAR’s Southern 500 at the notorious Darlington Racetrack in South Carolina. There’s some 50’s stuff (like the night before beauty contests — more than one NASCAR driver married a Darlington Queen, as I recall), but the car stuff is precious. Quite a contrast to what passes for NASCAR today. Darlington was the first ‘super speedway track’, built in 1953. You could only pass in a couple of places, the groove was so narrow; it was considered the most dangerous track in NASCAR for a very long time. (The link for the 56 race in my second post is probably a better video.) I love those first year Chrysler 300s. Enjoy!
Seeing a bone yard like that- er- sorry, collection- reminds me that every one of those cars was new at one time, someone paid a lot of money for it, and most likely felt pride in their new car.
