Normally I would post this as a laugher. Isn't this ridiculous? Beat up 2998 Dial. Ebay auction starting at $5k.

But maybe not. The seller, Franklin, is a respected South American seller and he moves a lot of watches and parts. Heck, I bought 2 Speedies from him 2 years ago. I presume he knows his market better than I do. Maybe this dial and price isn't so humorous after all.

IMO your first reaction was the correct one.

I'll just stare lovingly at my 2998, thank my beginners impulsivity and luck, and the French dealer who gave me a friends and family discount and promise that I will never sell it.

Always stick with your first answer. I learned that from watching game shows on TV :D

It is most definitely a 'car crash' of a dial - but in today's crazy market - who knows ?!

Please elaborate why $5k is reasonable ( no sarcasm meant).
When we start talking about these kind of numbers, aren't we venturing into the area of parting out watches, as their parts value may exceed a lesser examples value?.

I think this will take a while to sell at that price, but can't blame a guy for trying, right?

Great question. I was thinking along those lines as well. Sum of parts worth more than the watch?

I don't think anyone is saying it is. I'm fairly certain that the seller will make a pp deal for less.

If you had a beaten up 2998 with incorrect dial, then I guess there would be merit in replacing the dial with one with similar 'character', but $5k merit seems a stretch. If it were relumed would have to be an artful job so that the lume was not too nice looking.

Perhaps the first dial that went in space and returned to earth in this condition.

Such a watch would never be $20K plus (will it?!), and it would have to be in that territory to warrant $5K on such a memorable dial.

Whoever owned that watch must not have run the chronograph frequently based on the outline of the hand etched into the 3 o'clock subdial.

Important to state upfront - mine is a completely unsophisticated collector's point of view, but putting overall value aside, I wouldn't pay $1000 for an othewise mint-condition watch that included a dial that looks like this. It looks to me as though it was pulled out of the local dump.

There are many times when I wish I had the free cash to acquire something out of my reach - this is definitely not one of those instances.

I've been paying close attention to the words of wisdom from the astute collectors that frequent this forum. The best advice I've seen is to buy something that truly appeals to you from as aesthetic point of view.

Seems to be a consensus that this beat up 2998-3 -105.002-62 dial isn't worth $5,000.
What if it was a 2998-1/2 dial? Much harder to source.

Even harder still is finding a Wide Oval 2915 dial, either type. I'm guessing this dial would be gone in 60 seconds if it was correct for a 2915.
