'45 Suveran - How Much of an Enemy is Water?

Hey all!

I'm the proud owner of a fully serviced (purchased from OmegaEnthuisastLTD) 1945 Suveran and hoping to daily wear it. This left me wondering, with it having been recently fully serviced (thus I assume it is as water resistant as it'll ever be), how much do I need to fear the odd rain sprinkle or hand wash? Moreover, what can I do day-to-day to make sure it keeps ticking for me for years to come?

Thank you for your input!

Everyone has their own risk tolerance, but I wouldn't worry about rain or hand washing, assuming that you're not caught in a flood or submerging your arms in the wash basin. I would, however, remove the watch before washing dishes in the sink.

If you do wear it every day, I'd plan for servicing every ten years or so. With that, I'd expect the watch to outlast any current owner.

Excellent exactly what I was hoping to hear -- on that last point, I'd like to revise my question: what can I do day-to-day to make sure that I keep ticking for years to come? 😀

Jokes aside, thank you much!

The crown may not have any water resistance depending on what was done in the service.

Nothing really. Mechanical watches don't need user maintenance of any kind. But if that's not a satisfying answer, maybe:

  • Take the watch off of your wrist to manipulate the crown (e.g. to adjust the time or wind the watch).
  • After setting the time, ensure the crown is fully pushed back into the first position.
  • Don't put it on or take it off while standing over a hard floor (e.g. bathroom tiles).

You need to ask the services/seller. Was it pressure tested? If it has original crown I doubt it would be very waterproof or resistant.

Very nice watch but don't let it see water, not even in photos.

Real nice watch. Wear it often. Exercise normal care and you'll be fine.

As a dealer in Paris said when I bought my 2998-6 speedy from him ( my first vintage watch) . “Don’t take this to the beach. In fact, don't even think about the beach.” Water, door frames and night stands are vintage watch foes. Act accordingly.
