3861 vs. 1863 movement finishing and decoration comparison?

Kinda of an urgent ask related to my prior post on potentially selling my 1863 Sapphire Sandwich. Has anyone compared the look and finishing of the new 3861 movement vs. the 1863 (not 1861) movement. I know Fratello had a write up on the 3861 compared to the outgoing 1861, which definitely showed finishing and decoration improvements. And there were comparisons on the 3861 to the 1863 Sapphire to Sapphire overall look (step dial, smaller case, nicer bracelet, etc.).

But is there any resources or personal opinions on the comparisons on the finishing of the movements themselves (beveled angles, striping, and circular graining)? I read that you can't even see the additional jewels when comparing the 1861 to the 3861. Any direct comparison? I know that the 3861 will have hacking, meta, with newer parts to improve accuracy and magnetic resistance, but I that is somewhat minor to me if it doesn't change my eye for it.

Thanks for your help!

Tim Mosso compared both and concluded that the 1863 has a slightly better finish and may even have some handfinished parts while the 3861 is machine finished due to higher production numbers (it is in both the hesalite version and the sapphire sandwich). Anyway, probably impossible to see the differences with the naked eye. The 3861 is gorgeous imo, as is the 1863.

Thank you very much for this response! I didn't find this Tim Mosso comparison, even though I've seen his other reviews of watches on youtube. But this is very helpful. You confirmed my decision to keep my 1863 and maybe do a dial modification later if I wanted a different look. The 1863 has always been gorgeous to me too!

Somehow the 3861 seems more rough around the edges (literally), with a more "machine-made" feel without the smooth "warm" anglage that the 1863 had.

Found the video where Tim Mosso (WatchBox, now 1916 Co) reviewed the 2021 Omega Speedmaster. Here are some of his thoughts if others OF members wanted a 3861 vs. 1836 movement finishing comparison.

1863: Movement finishing compared to the caliber 1863, between the 1861 and display case back 1863, the 1863 was a much more handsome movement. When looked at the 1863 on the display case back..."the bridge work specifically the beveling was so rounded and mirrored if you told me it was hand finished I would have believed you it was that good".

3861: Now one movement for solid and display case backs. Both of them get caliber 3861 there is no difference in finishing. "It’s not as raw as the 1861 used to be and it’s not as pretty as the 1863 used to be". On the new watch, again there are no plastic parts like the 1861, Delrin to be precise. "But you look at the bridges and they are obviously filed with the machining marks prominent. You can see the machining and we’re no longer talking about a mirrored bevel, we’re talking about a straight bevel, we’re no longer talking about a glossy almost hand finished shine and for me that was part of the magic of the display case back Moonwatch. Still good looking technically, a lot better, but all the same I feel like Omega downgraded the display case back version of this watch.

For purely aesthetics, I do like the 1863 more than the 3861, but like the 321 above both. If there is a Speedy movement to show off it's the 321.

Agreed! That's why I am keeping my 1863 Sapphire Sandwich and possible put a modern bracelet on my 105.012 to see if it can be dressed up. The new 3863 Sapphire Sandwich has almost the same look.

Comparing the new 3861 with an 1866 from around 2002 (same as the 1863 but with date/moon), the 1866 has a smoother, more polished look to the bridge surfaces and the anglage looks hand done. With the 1861 its obviously all machine done, and it's pretty obvious even with the naked eye. Mosso's observations noted above are pretty much spot on. Both are nice to look at but the 1863/66 versions are better finished. The one here was rebuilt and overhauled by Adam Lewis in Perth in 2021.
