Hello OF!

In the search for a near birth year speedy, I came across a post on my local craigslist. Initially I did not have high hopes. Description was not very detailed, and the reply from the seller took about a week… But this turned out to be a very pleasant experience!

Using the E-version of moonwatch only (IMO, worth the price!) and the pictures on the ad, I was able to confirm that this was in fact the Apollo XI 20th anniversary edition, 3590B/3590.50, produced in 1989. One of 4000. There were variations released to USA (3590B) and Germany (3590BA) which had individual numbers engraved on the case as well at /2000 and /250, respectively. This one simply has the APOLLO XI 1969 on the side.

Identification:
Printed omega tritium non-step dial with T SWISSS T at 6 o clock, DNN bezel, Tall Speedmaster S, Caseback Q with a short tail, 70 serif bezel.

This was delivered to Switzerland where the seller (who is Swiss) purchased it from a dealer. Box was not included, as it is still in the seller’s home there.

It has an original vintage 1171 bracelet with 606 endlinks.
Can someone confirm whether or not this model came with the 1171? I’ve seen some reports that some came with 1450/808.

Onto the hesalite crystal.
There were two palpable gouges in the crystal between the 3 and 6 subdial.
Vigorous polywatch polishing alone did nothing.

Here’s the process I used:

1. Mask the bezel

2. After 1000 grit sandpaper (!)

3. After 2000 grit sandpaper (wet sanding when going this fine is more effective)

4. After 3000 grit sandpaper

5. After polywatch, shine!

The hesalite omega logo is still there!

And just to finish off, here's the new family...

3590.50, 311.30.42.30.01.005 purchased 2018, 60th anniversary trilogy, 3572.50 hesalite sandwich with Mitsukoshi mod (and an uncle seiko holzer bracelet)

Nice work! The watch could have originally come in strap or bracelet. I’ve seen 1450/808 and 1479/812 for the 20th anniversary editions. A 1171/633 could have been a service add on. Getting an extract would tell you what strap/bracelet the watch would have been shipped with.

I think the 4000 unnumbered edition has always been supplied with 1450.
I have a USA version, one of the latest produced (1993! Even if MWOnly indicates 1991 max! My Omega extract says 1993...), with a 1450, but some of these last produced 2000 LE serie only have been supplied with 1479.
Never a 1171...

Not always... Mine says nothing, except "steel bracelet"...

Good to know, thanks! I guess mine is likely a service bracelet then.

Polywatch is OK but is outrageously expensive for what you get, and this is better stuff:

My personal belief, if a crystal is so badly damaged that you used sandpaper on it, it's better off replaced.

Thanks for the link - will look into it when I run out of polywatch.
I was definitely prepared to get a replacement if sanding didn't work - but now I can't even tell there was ever a mark!
