    Passion
    Knowledge
    Resources (AKA funds)

The third one is usually the rate limiting step.

I would add, "a sense of priority and balance." When the hobby (or passion) begins to intrude into areas it shouldn't (family/finances/employment) it becomes a bad thing.
Or you just don't have a life :)

A bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing!
Passion is usually at the forefront of everything I try to do, otherwise, why do it? :)
Resources just have to be realistic, so I try to set goals... But don't always suceed ::facepalm2::

I'd add "not living in South America, especially in Brazil." Import taxes are ridiculously high here, so no importing for me -- and finding decent pieces I can afford is close to impossible, even simple ones. In just under a year of collecting (or gathering, rather, since I lack the knowledge and funds to get reeeeally collectible pieces) I only managed to score nine little pieces. :(

Not sure how long you've been collecting but you've amassed some really cool pieces I'd say.. When you see the holy grail it will be the right time....I second adding patience to that list!!

That's tied in to "resources" - as in, a lack of. :p And you can call it a hobsession.

The harder I work, the luckier I get. ;)

Knowledge used to be the hardest thing to get, but now it's done a complete 180 and is the easiest to come by. There are books and forums for just about any brand or type of watch.

Very true. Without this forum and several of my local watch friend, I would say my watch collecting passion will dim in less than 3 months.

As with knowledge, technology especially internet based, really enable how we connect with people which share same passion.

No, because there's only three things you need.
Is this beginning to sound like a Monty Python sketch?

Integrity (sorry if my English does not work fully for this)

Integrity enough to think for yourself - do not just run along with the pack. Like what you like and collect it with pride. A seldom walked path can be very satisfying and rewarding - but you might feel lonely if you do not have integrity and trust in yourself.

Another integrity could be called honesty - to yourself and others.

In Swedish it is called "integritet" and I would like to see more of it. In too many situations people just do not take the time to reflect over what they stand for themselves and - just do what everyone else does. In my mind this applies to most aspects of life and/but certainly in collecting.
