    Hi everyone,

Found this example of a 2998-2 online, some others may have seen it - but just wanted to get some advice.

Serial looks to be correct for the reference, as does the caseback. Although the movement needs some love. Case and pusher is ok (i think) but missing one, not sure if crown is correct, but looks like the older omega logo (flat foot)

    Lollipop hand is nice.

Dial appears to be correct with smaller minute marks, but from photos looks terrible condition :( Also bezel looks to be replaced, should it be a base 1000 for an early 2998? and also one smaller hand is replaced.

What does everyone else think - could this be an ok project at a good price, or is it too far gone?

Exciting to find a 2998-2, however this one appears to have been exposed to water / moisture based on the condition of movement and dial. This would cause me to walk away unless the price was exceptionally low.

You sure are good at finding desireable watches in poor shape

Yes, should have a base 1000 bezel ... 'good buy' depends on price...this is not the most beautiful or attractive example, and has excessive wabi-sabi, but there is something there perhaps for someone.

I love the way that the non-dial-shots are all perfect with respect to white, but the ones that contain the dial look like something from a 70's horror movie. Deception?

I detect hints of a chocolate dial.

And correcting the images somewhat for a more accurate color representation shows that to be true.

I love the patina, but I guess it all depends on the price, and it would be good to see some clean, clear shots of the dial.

For me the lollipop hand moves it into the Well Worth Considering column, but then I’m no expert, I just love the look of lollipops.

As long as you know this is going to be a long, expensive, sometimes hopeless, exciting project and you are comfortable with the price then you should give it a go :) oh yes and add 50% on top of the budget you have in mind to have it all correct so you will not be disappointed in the end, just a matter of experience

So a labour of love then? :p

Who could help it? - it just looks like it needs a helping hand

Am I the only one thinking "Does that watch have any redeemable features"?

You're making it sound like a lost little puppy when in fact it is a mange ridden mutt that would be better put down.

Not a bad point, I normally come here to have some sense talked into me :whipped:

Maybe it will be a parts watch. We'll see

Definitely not :) there is a chance the movement has suffered as @merchandiser said earlier but with better images and video of the watch working and a reasonable price then may be there's something to do... but this is in Ed's hands now :)

Maybe ill take a chance, I normally do and it has paid of well so far - but only at a price where I know it's a good deal.

But thanks to everyone for entertaining my enquiry  - I do tend to day dream a bit

Is it me or should the serial be in the 17.3(02) mio. range?

Edit: it's a lollipop version, considered to be early.

 beginner mistake you are absolutely right I missed this... from 17 302 xxx up until 17 761 xxx according to Speedmaster101
This serial falls into the 2998-4 region... it seems like a good franken one, but could still work for the "part watch" Ed was talking about...

If the movement number is 17761xxx I believe it is correct for a 2998-2.

Totally agree with you, it could be indeed a 6 and not a 8, which would match with the caseback and the dial as early 2998-2 dials have the oval O
