This is a good looking watch. The serial is a bit low for a -2 and the dial is stepped, whereas received wisdom is the dial should be domed and the serial 177x xxxx. (This is all simply gathered wisdom, no proof, just observation).

Now these two things are hunches not facts, but many, many 2998's are put together using seamaster movements and as there are two unaligned facts in the mix I am on alert. The movement ring is slotted (replacement) rather than drilled holes.

More circumstantial evidence to a put together watch is the hands which look too new, and the thin lume. Now thin lume was available at the time but these are also reproduced as service replacements, and these hands look new. The fatter triangular lume hands would have made me swing toward original fitments.

Finally it was owned by a watch maker. While you would have thought that's a good thing, what it tells me is that the owner was adept at changing internals and often not too concerned with originality.

Now from what I see it is a watch with excellent condition parts. However for a 2998 to be worth over $10,000 it must have a base1000 bezel, and a domed dial. This has neither. To be worth over $15,000 it must have these things and a brown excellent condition dial.

Personally I am interested in this watch, but the price is very, very high.

I think the owner (who is an excellent honest dealer, in mostly rolexes) is in post acquisition blue heaven, and is over exited about the watch.

In an open eBay auction I would expect it to sell for
    7000-8200
. Perhaps a little more now the fever is spreading....

Concerning your thoughts about the early step an dome 2998 dials I think there is no rule wether the 2998-1 is only with the little step whereas the 2998-2 with the pure dome. However I saw both on both. I have a 2998-1 with and one without dome and a 2998-2 with step.

The he amazing thing is, that all 2915 dials have very slight steps and also all later dials until the 70ies were stepped. This early 2998 dial you mention is the only over a 20 years period of many many different Speedy references with a pure dome dial :)

The ebay watch looks like in very good condition. A BASE1000 bezel however is a must have in this price range. If all is untouched and never refreshed might be doubted but the dial is superb.

I think it's quite possible that all is correct with this watch - the bezel, hands, dial and movement could be correct for the -2. Dial looks to me could be a domed one and not stepped. I wouldn't be surprised if it fetches close to the asking.

17.302.xxx is early, but ok for a -2. Bezel should be base 1000

This font layout is that of a 2998 domed dial
    not a stepped dial.
But what is strange to me is the length of the
12 hour totalizer hashes and the 60 minute totalizer
hashes. I have only seen 2998 dome variants that have
the hashes ending at the step-up of the subdial
or very close to it. This watch has hashes that
go much further into the floor of the subdials.

On pic 2 the little step can be seen. Dome would be with completely no step at all.

Not me though this one looks nice. Haven't bought a cal. 321 speedmaster in about 2 years - since then it's just become a whole lot harder to find examples that are nice and original at a price I am willing to pay.

I should get a couple more Speedys at that price and with some more coin left over. I'm satisfied to sit this one out...

Would be cool if anyone could post example or two of a domed dial

Really didn't expect that, 2 years is a very long time especially for you

For cal. 321 speedmasters yes - have focused on other vintage omega models which I feel are still undervalued.

School continues...Looking at the pristine example above ::jumpy::
and want to clarify 'domed' dial. Meaning the overall shape of entire dial or ....?

    Think two year old here...

I love this thread - especially the careful observations of minute detail by spacefruit, BASE1000, and MSNwatch. This is what makes this Forum GREAT!!

Even better - I wonder if the seller even has a remote clue as to how throughly his watch is being scrutinized!! :)

    cheers,
    Mark
