I like that watch. Too much early bidding. It's not going to be a steal.

It's gone! What happened. I thought the auction had a few more days to go.

    I'm not surprised.

its a watch going to an educated and sophisticated buyer, for a great deal of money.

You don't want eBay in the middle of that, even with (I just noticed) the change in watch final value fees, now limited to £50 in eBay.co.uk.

i would have liked to have seen what he took for it. My guess is $50k

Is it 50 quid? In Australia I think its about $250 for the top bracket, or around 140 quid

    Just checked using the "calculator".

final value fees capped at £50 for business seller and £75 for private.

while I will be the first to criticise eBay for many things, in this case they have clearly listened to the watch community, or at the least realised the fee structure uncompetitive with other Internet based operations.

The bricks and mortar cautions continue to get higher prices and charge about 25% plus or minus depending on how much and who you are.

As achim pointed out many months ago, high end watch sellers,
with an eBay "shop" can avoid the fees charged to non-shop sellers
for cancelled auctions that have bids on them. This allows them to use
eBay as more of a advertising venue for their wares. This is why you
see many of the high dollar auctions end early. The reason is, this:
"...When your item sells, in most cases we require sellers to receive payment via PayPal. PayPal charge a fixed fee of £0.20 plus a percentage of the transaction value that ranges from 1.4% to 3.4% depending on how much your total sales are each month."
It's the avoidance of Paypal fees.
I think gone is the day, as current ebay rules stand, of the watch
collector excitement of watching or participating in the Rolex 5510
auction to determine the true value of a rare piece.
Andrew Shear, by my observance, is one of the most reputable sellers
of high end watch collectibles in the world. His descriptions are always
honest. He has built a fine reputation and because of it, he gets the
finest pieces offered to him to buy or for consignment.
I would agree that the clearing price on this watch was around $50k.

This is another highly collectible watch, from the same reputable seller.

    Respectable Member Seamonster,

Please do not post such watches.
They put my children's college funds at risk.

Dear respectable member Seamonster. These watches are so desirable, somebody just could not wait until the bidding end and offer significant $$$ that Mr. Shear could not refuse. As for us, we only observe in awe.

    Thank you.

Yep, the listing was up to $15K and the next time I looked it was gone. Somebody made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Those old chunky Milspec FF's are everything I don't want in a watch, yet I still crave one. WISdom - the smarter you get, the more money you spend. ::screwloose::
