Hi, The post about the aluminum insert for 2913/14755/165.014 reminded me of a project that I have been trying to get started for some time now. I was lucky enough to come across a stock of bezels for these early seamaster 300s, but of course the Bakelite is long gone. I considered sending them to Aldo, but after emailing him four times with no response and reading peoples stories about frustrations with dealing with him and the Italian postal service, I decided to refurbish the bezels myself using lacquer, clear coat, and dry transfer decals. I did a test run on an aftermarket submariner bezel insert, and the results are pretty good. The issue is I need to create decals with the proper font. I know a graphic designer who is able to create the necessary vector files for me, but first I need high quality photos of the bezel numbers. I have google image searched every example that I can find, but I can't find an image that is both super high resolution and showing each number clearly and in proportion. So, I am wondering if someone who has an original 2913, 14755 or 165.014 bezel would be willing to take well lit, high resolution, face on photos of the bezel, with each number showing clearly. Individual photos of each set of 10, 20, 30 ,40, and 50 would be a huge bonus as well. Thanks!
I'm very interested in how this turns out! I have a 166.0251 and the bakelite bezel insert is rough. There are none to be found so I was contemplating restoring it. Keep us posted
Not to do with USA, the count forward bezels 50 40 30 ..... were for the first CK2913 references, up to -3 I think. After that came the 10 20 30..
Are you sure? Im not specialist about CK2913 just a fan, there is here a -5 with 50 40 ... -http://www.davidoffbrothers.com/our-archive/omega-seamaster-300ck2913-5-1960
AFAIK -1 to around the -3 had the 50-10 count back bezel and after that the -3 to -6 the 10-50 count forward. The -5 that you show I would expect to have small arrow hands and maybe a lollipop It´s possible the bezel was redone, I know mine is and an awful lot are.
Has anybody tried to fix this inserts with acrylic ? Like the one u use in prostetic teeth and the one for nail repair . I am a former Dental technician and have worked a lot with acrylic . I recently bought a nail kit from China . Just to try it if i could fix some acrylic crystals . I work ok but i need a vakuum or pressure chamber to take out the bubbles . But i think it would work very nice to fix bakelite . The acrylic comes in many different colors so it could be made to match any color in the inserts . And as a top coating use the clear and polish it to like a crystal . Just like the bakelite . The only thing it smell very much and is not good to inhale the fumes from the acrylic monomer .
We have used Ceramit two component resin stuff to restore bezels of older Constellation 82`s with good results. In larger areas the small air bubbles could be problematic but with tip of needle they are easy to get rid of. Ceramit will cure hard and the surface will be resilient. If you are able to produce nice decals with correct font they would be very useful.
That ceramit stuff looks like a great option. I'll get some and try it out. Thanks for the tip! I'm still waiting for the decals...
A friend of mine photoshopped the correct fonts and these waterslide decals are now waiting to be tested.
Hi there, how did you get the waterslide decals to be printed in white? It is my understanding that waterslide decals have to be printed on a laser printer and that most printers cant print white ink?
Hi! I was not fully satisfied with the decals, they had very thin film which was fragile. The white ink was not intense enough to give full coverage. The easiest solution at the moment comes from Sweden by RCDesign. Hope this helps.
