So I may have just overpaid for a very dirty scratched up textured dial Seamaster. The Seller did not know how to open the case for photos. They Guaranteed the watch to be Solid 14K White Gold tested at a Jewlers.

There are no hallmarks or references to gold on the case. I open the caseback and sure enough it states Acier Staybrite...

I informed the seller who swore this was a Solid White Gold 14K case. They said that they did not test the caseback but tested the case and lugs and still guaranteed they were 14K white Gold. They are responsive to emails and are willing to work things out with me so I am going to have the case tested for Gold.

What are your opinions on this watch? I cannot find much on the 2438 - 6 reference. The movement is a 28.10RA SC PC. It does not come up on the vintage database. The caseback leads me to think this is just a standard very dirty scratched Stainless Steel Seamaster with a nice (origial?) dial.

If the case tests positive for gold then what is the story? Is this all original or is this the wrong caseback for this case?
    I would appreciate any insight.

The dial on that thing is wrong, too. The logo should have rounded edges and no Seamaster script on that early case ref.

Great eye! Would the dial have been for a 351 or 354 then?

Well, I wonder why you decided to pay a lot of money for something you don't really know anything about. Try returning it to get your money back while you still can.

That's a little harsh. We all make mistakes. The seller is willing to offer a full refund so it looks like it will be going back. White gold Seamaster with a black textured dial, a guarantee that the case was gold, no photos with the caseback off, and blurry photos are why I foolishly payed too much. Lesson learned.

Sorry if I made it sound a bit harsh, but that's how the truth sounds sometimes. There are ways to determine the gold quality without opening the case, beside researching on the watch model. But you'll get your money back so all is good.
