Isn't that a mouthful :-) Pretty nice condition and with a 37,5mm case.

What is the size of the case? Great watch BTW. Check that, just reread your original post, 37.5mm. Wonderful watch, truly a rare bird!

I never understood the desire to block off serial numbers. It's not like the watch is indistinguishable without it. The dial and case have marks specific to it.

Lovely watch, though. Very lovely.

Was a bit busy but Longines comfirmed the watch to be legit :-) Reference is not 23646 but 5681 (not surprisingly). They also confirmed that a batch of those was delivered to the Dutch agent who orderded them tor KLM. I found out that mine was owned by a pilot so that adds up. I'm now trying to find out more about the KLM connection.

...for me it is a 23646, but I know that Longines has a second reference system. Why should they write 23646 on the case (and not 5681)?

Good question. I think they see 23646 as a batch number or so (and I think the batch was 100 pieces). On the other end: caseback has no 5681 marking on the inside.

Good question.

I have a better question - why do you have over 300 posts yet no avatar?

EDIT - never mind, you have one now. After 3 years here, you'd think somebody would have learned that gag avatars happen.

23646 is what Longines calls an "order number" ("numero de commande") and it is not the Longines' internal reference number.

By contrast, and as Longines put it in an email to me a month ago, what's known as the "reference number" may appear on the inside case back but often does not appear on the case at all.

Bottom line, the Longines reference number is an internal reference which most often bears no connection to numbers engraved on the case-- and is separate from the "order numbers" on the case back.
From what I've seen on one of my watches, seems like the reference indicates the shape of the case and the caliber type (not the dial I was told). It therefore seems plausible (IMHO) that the order number on the outside of the case back refers to batches.

OK - let´s call it a "batch number". Anyway it is the best method of orientation. If I hear Ref. 5415, it can be with or without lume-hands/dial. But if I hear 23432, I know it´s (or should be) non-lume + leaf hands, though 23485 has a dial with luminous numbers and Longines-typical luminous hands.
5415 is a mid-forties steel cased chrono (rarely: 14k gold with screw back - never hold one in my hands); water protected with press-on back and 13ZN.

I think it is indeed a batch number but as stated mine has no reference in the caseback. Anyway: I think this type was made in 3 batches of about 100 examples each.

Thanks. Appreciate it! Not the sharpest but the longest I'd say

I was told same thing. It is the case order number and not the watch ref.
