for a several months now, my crown felt like it was more difficult to “catch” the threads when pushing it in to lock it down

Yesterday I looked down and the crown was “unlocked” spontaneously, as in winding mode.

I could barely lock it back down but was finally able to

Otherwise watch in perfect working order. I had a full service in September 2017, so out of the 2 year warranty.

Local boutique mentioned they have to send it out to get inspected (ie they can’t fix it in-house)

Does it sound like an “easy fix” issue?
    @Archer?
    Thanks

Remove the movement, remove bezel and crystal, heat case to remove case tube, clean case, install new case tube, install crystal with new gasket, install movement, install new crown on stem, install bezel, seal up and pressure test.

    Cheers, Al

If it was serviced 9/17, wouldn’t the warranty still be valid? You’d have until September of this year.

That’s usually how it happens. As soon as the warranty goes out, something breaks.

Not something I would expect would be covered under warranty, as this usually happens from cross threading the crown.

Warranty issue or not, it needs to be fixed. And cross threading is the most likely cause.
The process for the fix has been described. Just make sure who ever does it knows what they are doing. I.e. if they reckon it's a £10 fix, then they are unlikely to be doing it correctly.

Took it in to OB, and they said it needs to be sent out for full service no matter what.

Something about if they open it up to that extent, they can’t or won’t do anything less...

Was trying to spend less if possible-
    Oh well...

If there is a problem like stripped threads, the crown and case tube should always be replaced as a set.

    Caps lock off maybe...

But if the crown won’t screw down, then both case tube and crown are changed.

You don't need a full service, you need to find an authorised repairer in your area who can do the crown and tube swap. In the UK I would send that to Swiss Time Services who would do it for around £100-125. If you are based in the US then there is likely to be someone closer, not sure how easy sending to Canada is but perhaps speak directly with Archer who has kindly offered the advice above since judging by his explanation seems able to do this without resorting to a full service.

Sorry for the offtop. Al, how do you heat the case up? (no pun intended, though I am sure someone will derail it:)

Small torch heating the area adjacent to the case tube.
