路Picked up this gold LED watch a couple months ago. I was intrigued by the engraving on the buckle - JOE THANKS FOR SUPER 76 PETE. Frankly, I was hoping it had been a gift from Pete Rose to Joe Morgan following their 1976 World Series repeat victory (Cincinnati Reds "Big Red Machine"). Joe Morgan died in late 2020, and unfortunately, I have not been able to get any sort of confirmation from Pete Rose. In fact, phone calls and emails to his management have not been returned. But in 1976 this was a baller watch!
Anyway, when I got it I realized that the tabs that hold the batteries down were missing (but the screws were there). Just last week I was able to pick up a Hamilton LED watch with the same Frontier 1602 movement for a reasonably low price. The battery tabs were there, so I swapped them into the Omega, and... tada! It is alive!
Originally I believe the 1602 was a dot matrix display, but this one has the line displays. From what I have read it was not uncommon for Omega to service these and replace the dot matrix with the line display from the Frontier 1603. On the Hamilton the dot matrix display has disconnected from the circuit board and was loose in the case. Maybe this was an issue with the Frontier 1602.
Because I used my daughters' college savings to buy this watch (as an investment on the chance it was connected to two of the greatest to ever play baseball) my wife has reminded me that I don't get to keep it. 馃榿
It really has a great weight on the wrist and the bracelet lies really nice. Makes me smile to see it on my wrist... like I am ready to rule the disco!
