    A) I leave this to others, but according to http://www.speedmaster101.com/price-chart/, it is (judging it as "running" condition)
    B) Looks original to me, I see the step dial, it has the early straigth "First watch.." inscription on the back (mine, with S/N 31008xxx is still without), in the second picture you can imagine the Omega in the hesalite.
    The bezel is badly worn, but these are not as rare as the DON ones, so can be replaced, if required.
    Bracelets like this (unstamped, 1175? with 47 end links) have also been observed in the past already on watches from this time frame.

    According to the same source mentioned above, 31619xxx is supposed to be the last serial numbers for this version, if true, this would make this one of the last with its S/N 31619390

    I'm a 321-guy myself. The condition on this one is not great but might make a nice original wearer (depending on the final price).
    I have a feeling these earlier c.861's (through the straight-line moon inscriptions) will become increasingly sought-after, to the point the lesser-conditioned examples like this one will be snapped up.
    But I'm just not prepared for that cam-lever stuff yet, even if they are more reliable!

    Definately.
    It needs work, but a great opportunity to buy a rare (ish!) 861 speedmaster.
    I expect it to go for $2500+
    The caseback is quite rare, though not really valued. (yet)

    Agree with Georgieboy. One remark: the highest observed s/n for this version is around 32.8 million

    What work would you recommend having done on that one, and ballpark what would it run? I'm debating putting in a bid.

    I am looking for something what would be a daily wearer, but is at the bottom of the price "horse-shoe".

    I like it! Whenever buying a vintage speedmaster, I get it serviced on arrival. It will run you in the $600 range and will need to be done periodically. Finding a period appropriate bezel won't be all that expensive. I think that bezel was used from 1969 into the 1990s, so it is not rare at all.

    $600. Hmm.. Are there any speedie models that are cheaper than others to regularly service? I know I am being sacrilegious to many here, but is the reduced less to service?

    I like the pros, but I am not sure about spending $600 every 6-7 years is something I want to do.

    Servicing of other mechanical chronographs including the reduced would be in the same range. Parts prices might differ but the amount of labor involved should be similar.

    Am I correct in my service every 6-7 years assumption?

    Are speedies/chronographs much more $$$ to service in comparison to other mechanical watches? For instance, would the cost of an automatic Omega Seamaster 300m be much less?

    I was debating between the two, and I like the Speedie, but maintenance cost does come into play. And no, I am not interested in any quartz watches :)

    If worn regularly, 6-7 years between service is correct. Many collectors flip watches so often the watches don't get serviced! But that's not my recommendation.
    Chronos are more costly to service due to all the extra pieces that need to coordinate together.
    Be warned. You might get advice not to get into the hobby if you can't justify the cost. Just do what you want, even if it means owning a stainless steel container of gummed-up, worn out gears that are worth a fraction of what you paid.

    Thanks for the advice. I have an omega seamster cosmic that was given to me by my great uncle. I am a 31 year old college professor, so it wears nice with a leather band for work. However, I am looking for something more "sporty" as well for the summer months when I am out and about. I like the Speedmaster Pros more than the Seamaster Pros, but regular maintenance costs are a big factor for me.

    I am really looking for just one other watch to augment what I have, I want to stay away from having more than 2 reasonably good watches to regularly maintain.

    Do the "newer" (~1985-2005) SMPs hold their value reasonably well?

    I'm not sure whether saving 200$ every 6-7 years (or even less often, if not worn regularly) really make a difference.

    Yes they are. Some models hold value better than the others. For example 2254.50 or Great white are two which had higher demand (thus higher resale value) compare to electric blue dials and 'normal' blue Bond SMP.

    Who will determine $$$ rather than chronograph vs non chrono. For example in Jakarta, $600 is Omega service service center pricing for Chronograph, $450 for plain non chronograph, $ 550 for GMT.
    I could find a decent quality service from an independent Rolex qualified watchmaker for $200 for chronograph and $ 120 for non chronograph. The key in here is to find high qualified independent watchmaker. Which many member here will gladly recommend decent ones.

    And as for servicing those cal 861s ... would it cost 600 or is that for 321s?

    That's good questions. If it involving many parts change, I would say 321 will costs more.

    I did not get it. roughly how much is service from an independent? The $600 cost has scared me a bit. I can do 200-300 every 6 years.

    Still learning. I'd rather make a good, informed decision and get exactly what I want and enjoy it for life than to rush.
