1968 Seamaster Cosmic - service scrubbed away all details at back plate

Apparently due to workload some employee, in its effort to brush away some tiny corrosion pits, he went on and scrubbed away the back of the case.

Now the Ω, the "Seamaster", the logo and the Ref. number are so faint that you cannot see it without the loupe.

I was told that a former Omega employee can recreate the back case.

The Ω and the Logo is my main concerns. Is it hard to recreate them faithfully ? where they made by hand in 1968 or it was done through some automation ?

What if they appear childish ?

Should I tell them not to do anything and have an eye for a spare case for substitution or go ahead ?

I wouldn’t bother with the “service” they are offering. It will never look the same. These are common enough you’ll probably be able to find one. But it might be cheaper to find a watchmaker with an Omega parts account and get a service case.

Service case ? You mean a case from Omega for the 1968 model ? Do they still stock these?

That's not uncommon, Omega also offers lots of original parts for the Seamaster 120 model. I think they sometimes just produce more stock. For example: i have a 1977 Seamaster Cosmic and the first batch of the date wheel was made of plastic. I ordered a new one and thats metal. So not only they produce more, they also listen to their customers because the plastic ones tend to wear out.

I'm no Omega certified reseller but afaik if there is a serial on the case they want the old case so they can use the serial in the new case.

Case is available in stainless steel from Omega - you can't order it yourself, but an Omega certified watchmaker can, and then fit your movement inside.

Cheers, Al

Prices will vary by country and currency, but around $1000

Thank you ....

Going to the corner to bleed ..... 😀

From your experience how rare would it be for a former omega mechanic to reproduce the engravings at the back of the watch like fonts and the Seamaster logo ?

If it's any consolation you can easily find a case for a 166.045 - I try to win these for cheap prices to scrap the movement for movement parts, then sell the dial / case on eBay

It's a tragic event, my suggestion would be to try and cover your monetary loss then use those funds for a new case

The downside is it's not easy to replace the case / remove the movement on these watches

Trying to reproduce the seahorse etching/engraving will look terrible.
