The question of original pricing of Omegas is often asked.
This Constellation is up for auction in the near future and has it’s original Dutch sales receipt.

340 Guilder for the watch head and a further 62.50 for the BOR in Nov ‘67
So, the bracelet is almost a fifth of the cost of an already very expensive watch !
(Some kind Dutch member might like to compare that to £/$s or to ave monthly wage at the time )

it’s actually a really nice watch for anyone after one of these but I suspect it will be no bargain at a starting price of €1,400

So if my research and my math is correct the original purchase price for the watch and bracelet was roughly $275 USD at the 1967 exchange rate. No idea what the average monthly wage was at that time.

Folks have been getting a bit hot under the collar recently about posting auction links - so I’ve sent you a PM.

I wouldn't worry about it, you started the thread anyway and it's just about at all it's money with such a high starting price and I assume all the added auction costs to go on top.

having had a closer look at the watch, the case is in good condition but it does have some dial issues - so at approx €1,750 all in, I think it’s definitely all the money and more.

I looked at old Guilder to US Dollar exchange rates back in 1967. Seems to have been about 3.6 Guilders to US$1. So original price is more like $120 back then with the bracelet. At the same 6.78 times inflation rate, that works out to about $815 adjusted to 2020 dollars.

You need to multiply that figure by at least 4 to account for the depreciation of the US dollar versus the Swiss Franc since 1967. Exchange rate was 4.32 Francs to $1 in 1967. Right now, 1 Franc is about $1.09.

So a Swiss watch that cost $120 in 1967 would be the equivalent of a little over $3,600 today.

275 bucks was alot of money back in 1967, most people didn't make that in one month.

Actually, I had the wrong information on the exchange rate at the time. In recalculating, I came up with $112, which is close to the $120 figure that gatorcpa calculated. Still a lot of money for 1967. Not sure what a stainless steel 167.005 with an authentic Omega BOR is worth today, but I have one. 😀

Suppose it's all relative. The modern day equivalent is £5190.00, which most people don't earn in a month.

To which modern Omega are you referring? I’m thinking Constellation Globemaster as it’s the only modern Omega with a pie pan dial. The stainless steel bracelet models retail for $7,200 USD. Grey market prices are about 30% off retail.

OK, so USD equivalent of £5,190 is about $6,200. Not too far off.
