Hey guys I wanted your opinions on a 1965 seamaster 165.002 cal 522 and a 1970 Geneva. Both are beautiful time pieces, I guess my questions are the differences between the two besides the obvious design differences. Also what your guys estimated value you would put on each of these specific examples. I seriously appreciate anyones opinion As I'm continuing my hunt for my first omega I just find my self tossing and turning between these two choices.

I'm not sure If I mentioned the movements which are in both firstly the 1965 seamaster has the 522 then the 1970 has the 1022 in it.

They are two very different watches. One is classic 60’s while one is typical 70’s.

The 552 is a better movement than the 1022 IMO and would certainly be a factor in my decision.
In fact there’s no decision on my part, it would be the 166.002 if the price is right.

Is that because in general you typically prefer the seamaster or is that movement that much better, what makes it better and what's a reasonable price to pay for the seamaster and for the Geneva? Thanks

It’s moderately better to have the 552, the 1000 series movements can be good if maintained but rarely are, the Seamaster is the better of the two but there are many other options around too depending on where you are country wise. I try to post a variety of entry level items in the vintage omega recommended thread so maybe keep an eye out there

OK gotcha with that being said would you say that this 70s omega geneve is in good shape the dial looks to be original and the crown in my opinion seems OK. But the band and dial all look very clean and well taken care of wouldn't you say, basically they are asking $550 for this geneve whereas the 65 seamaster I've brought him down from 800 to 650 what would you say to these prices?

I think that you should take a little more time to look at different watches before deciding. With some more experience, I think you will look back and be happy that you didn't buy the Geneve, the condition of the case leaves a lot to be desired IMO. It's not clean, it's polished.

The Seamaster isn't bad, but I'd still suggest looking around more. These two watches are night-and-day different. With a little more time and experience, I think you will refine your preferences a bit.

And read the "how to fish" thread if you haven't already.

Those are the words I wanted to hear I have spent a couple months looking and I have read that thread. Thanks for your opinion my biggest question is how to tell the difference between polished and clean? Also I'm guessing from what you said you want to avoid polished watches and instead look for clean. Also with the seamaster in question when you say not bad what would make it more desirable, just trying to refine my palette and find the right watch for me. Also in your opinion what's the price point to expect to pay for a good worthy seamaster? Lastly another curiosity I had was with the seamaster cosmics with this style back is it hard to take apart to see the movement as I like this one as well but the seller can't provide pics of the internals and movement because he's afraid of taking apart this style watch because it has tendency to break is this true or a red flag. Thanks guys seriously appreciate it.
