Described as a 2996 in the catalogue, I wonder what the early Speedmaster experts think of this as a potential buy. It looks like a nice original watch to me, but I'd be reassured by more authoritative views before I made my bid. Ouch! Hopefully there will be no shilling and only knowledgable bidders will be weighing in. That would keep the final price down. Fat chance, I know...
I like it. Good hands, dial hard to asses but might be really nice in the metal. its a later one, personally I don't value them as high as the earlier ones. The rough bezel, and the strap, are irrelevant really. if it goes for the top estimate then it's a strong price all in. however, as we all know, not many on the market.
Nice example of a late 2998 speedmaster. If it goes for the top end of the estimate (or over), I would want a nicer bezel and the original stretch bracelet.
Hammer price £4,800 (top of estimate) plus 24% commission to pay. I didn't get it - but well done to whoever did.
Seems like a good buy compared to some of the other Speedies that went today... £1800 for the weird franken Ed White (lot 115), £1900 for the straight text 861 with incorrect bezel and cheap aftermarket strap (lot 127) and £2000 fro the Ed White with overpolished case back and cheap aftermarket strap (lot 128). Makes me very happy that I went for this in February: http://omegaforums.net/threads/omeg...on-the-moon-case-back-and-1039-bracelet.9932/
