Hey guys, I hope this doesn't quickly turn into one of those "Look what I bought blindly on eBay", "oh sorry mate you have been taken for a ride" threads! Im pretty new to this decent watch malarkey. I own a few old Geneves but nothing special. The other day I impulse bought this Constellation. I have always wanted one, but admit Im no expert. While only having a browse on eBay I ended up bidding last minute on one and just happened to win! It is a 1958/9 Pie Pan, Gold Capped with BOR bracelet. Its a cal 551, case serial number 14381 3 SC. In general It is in very good condition, the dial has a little bit of patina and the gold plating is wearing off the bracelet slightly. The crown is damaged but that doesn't bother me (although I don't think it is the right one?). To be honest when it turned up today it was in far better nick than I was expecting and now I am just hoping it isn't turkey, it just seems too good to be true. I do question whether it has had a re-dial or anything major. Please find below some images for you to cast your well informed eyes over! Cheers James
I like it. I would not hesitate to make this a daily wearer or put in a rotation... Nice survivor piece.
James welcome to the forum and welcome the connie club. If Mike validates then you are good Mike, dont know if it is the pic or my eyes... Do you think the minute markers are off ?
This is all rather reassuring, I got it for less than one of my Geneves, so I was think it was all too god to be true, to be honest the pictures are a bit analytical and it looks far nicer in person!
OP (James) Please kindly dont mind my posts i am just learning.. i could have taken this to private messages i thought may be my questions will help new folks like me. Mike here is what i see In PIC 5 Minute 2 nd 3 are out of line with 1 and 4? and between 4'O clock and 8'O clock the bottom edge seems retouched? and the mark 27 and 34 have been wiped off in this process?
Everybody's learning (well, except for gatorcpa, MSNWatch and some other senior experts) I think that what you refer to as being retouched is actually a small dent in the plexi. There was this one time that I thought the dial of one of my watches was damaged when looking at a picture.. only finding out it was just the plexi that gave the illusion.
I must say I think that what you have seen is a combination of the old crown and angle of the pictures, I can see what you are saying in the pics but not in person if that makes sense! And yes please do put all of that in the comments as I am also keen and learning!
Mmmmm, rose golds nice! I can see this becoming an expensive hobby! Even though this seems to have been a bargain!
I had never really considered gold watches before, however with its relatively small size its not too OTT and I think it looks wonderful!
