Hi,

New poster here and in need of a bit of help and advice, so thanks in advance.

I inherited the Omega you can in the photos from my grandfather in 1985 when I was 13. He was Spanish and it reached me via my aunt who had to secure it from her late father's second family to pass to me, his eldest grandson, as I was his eldest living male blood relative. I've keep it since then only because it connected my mother to her father. She adored him and moved to England when she was 14 after her parents separated, so Mum didn't see him that much in her life.

Recently with my mother now having passed away I think it's time to sell the watch. I have barely worn it, less when my Mum came to stay, and would prefer something more discreet. It looks like it's 18K gold from engraving inside the case back, the strap, hands and lug all seem original. There's some scratches to the glass and general wear, but doesn't look like it has ever been polished.

I work in London, and maybe I can either get it valued there and would be grateful for any pointers. Or should I get it serviced and refurbished, perhaps replace the glass and get it cleaned before selling? While I am sad to let it go, it seems the right thing to do and right time to see what my options are.

The watch looks genuine but the dial has obviously been refinished at some point, and not well, which rather limits its value as an Omega watch. That said, if the bracelet is also solid gold and the same 18K purity as the head, it will have significant value for the gold alone.

If you are intending to sell it, do so as it is. Any money you spend to service it wont be recouped when you sell.

If you doubt what I say about the redial, search 'Omega Geneve 2981' and you'll see what I mean. This started life as a very attractive so called cursive script model with a two tone trompe-l'œil pie pan style dial, neither of which this has any longer.

Thanks, and I see what you mean about the dial, it explains why I haven't been able to find a photo of one similar.
