Good day everyone!
I have acquired a 1956 Railmaster with a dial that has been relumed in the 90s.
Looking for help to restore dial and probably hands as well to original condition.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Oh Dear......, Should have gone to Spec Savers.....hands not bad. Dial bad relumed. First check, if in fact it is Lume or Paint. If it glows, better News. Because then it might be water based Tritium. And that might be removed on the smeared Edges of the luminous Wells with a finely pointed timber skewer stick/ toothpick size. Try very carefully, if lume flakes off. Wetting that edge with a very fine soft brush will help. If that works, you are in luck. Just work on the smeared Edges and leave the lume in the Wells. Use aged water based Tritium for the new Layer. Good luck. Kind regards. Achim

Is it just the lume or has the dial been completely refinished?

The dial itself looks questionable to me.

Here is a proper Railmaster dial. Notice the 1mm thickness vs a normal dial (.4 mm I think)

Wasn't the RM not introduced until 1957?

I agree. It's not only the odd "SWISS MADE", it's mainly the too small diameter of minute track, which makes me think the dial has been reprinted.

Railmaster 2777-2, circa 1955
Railmaster 2914, circa 1957

Well, I cant say too much about the dial - weather it has been repainted or not.
If it was - it was dedinately done by 2 different people.
Hands and markers glow in the dark, so its definately not paint - I dont want to touch anything myself (done want to ruin it more).
15808XXX serial dates it back to 1956.
Maybe I should just finad another dial, if it is possible.

Can the old lume be removed permanently? New lume glows in the dark.

This one is nice. Do you know if it is possible to find a replacement for my dial? 1mm thikness is correct.

Finding a nice original dial is hard - they are rarely available and if they ever pop up for sale they are expensive. You might try contacting Rene in Germany and see what he says about restoring the dial you have:
