·Good evening everybody,
part four of my self-imposed path to refund recent arrivals: A 1950s 36mm Seamaster with a glossy black gilt dial.
The Watch
Omega Seamaster
Reference: 2938
Movement: cal. 284
Serial: 15569698
Year: 1957
Case: ~36mm in stainless steel
Dial: original, black gilt dial in glossy finish with yellow-gold furniture.
Strap: Hand-made Italian green leather
Condition
Pretty sharp, original example in a very attractive configuration. Please read the details though:
Dial & Hands: Completely original black dial with a glossy finish, all the writing is fully there and really pops out from the deep black. Yellow gold indices and hands, with the right indice at 12 showing discoloration. Lume has aged nicely in a beige-brown, some lume loss in the minute hand. Do note that the dot on 3 is on the plexi, not the dial. However, the dial does show some wear. There is a light layer of residue in some places, most notably above the Seamaster writing, right of the center, and at the outer edge in the left bottom quarter. That being said, I found it’s basically impossible to really depict this in pictures with the plexi on and it’s not very noticeable with the bear eye, except for in some specific angles. I’d say that this is a very attractive watch on the wrist, but I want to highlight the negative side as much as I can, so here’s a picture in artificial light, dial extracted from the case, in the worst possible angle of light. I’ve never managed to make it look anywhere near as bad on the wrist, but regardless:
Case: Original 35,5-36mm stainless steel case in pretty sharp condition. There are some deeper scratches at the underside of the lugs, possibly from a bracelet, and some weird ones on the caseback itself, possibly from opening attempts. It hasn’t seen much polishing, I’d say, and is in an overall very wearable and nice condition. Waterproof writing on the caseback is fully intact, what's also intact is a watchmakers mark on back of the bottom left lug...
Crown: Original Omega crown, correct style with flat feet logo, as it should be.
Crystal: Shows some minor scratches and a little chip at 3 and around 11. Generic replacement, it’s the only non-original part on the watch.
Movement: Original cal. 284, correct for the reference. The movement is very clean, sets and winds well and runs beautifully. The service history is unknown, though.
Strap: As depicted, a green, Italian hand-made strap. I might have alternatives to offer, should you desire.
