I was looking at a mid to late '50s explorer today and noted the crystal is very thick and flat. It is acrylic, which is correct, but I believed these watches to have domed crystals.

Can any of the Rolex gurus let me know what should be on it and when any changes were made ?

That sounds like a modern service crystal, akin to those commonly found on the 1016 Explorer (tropic 22 service crystal). The originals were all domed.

Thanks odam. I don't know if it's a 1016 or the earlier (6350 ?) one. I haven't been able to find any pictures of the 1016 or 6350 with a domed original crystal. Can you, or anyone else point me in the right direction ?

Here is one of my 1016s, both with the newer service tropic 22 and the original domed replacement 22 that I found to replace it. The photo with the bracelet shows the flat crystal.

Early Explorer 1 watches had Plexiglass not Crystal, I had one from new. They fetch a premium these days, I wish I had kept mine 44d5abbb23d7346bb7fabb36a6abc7ce_44_0.jpg fcf8848bcebff6412a1d2a0d6d1f7ffc_44_0.jpg
