Hello guys,

As some of you may be aware I collect watches mainly from the 1940s and mainly Omegas, and mainly steel ones.

Well my latest purchase fits two of those as a 1940s Omega, but is instead gold, and for these ones, for some reason I always struggle to pick bands!

As you can see other than a slight polishing on the case (damn previous owners) it's in wonderful condition, and I think deserves a strap which really accentuates it's design. It's on a black croc strap at the moment, which is lovely by all means - but, I feel like something else might be better!

I've considered a gold plaque vintage 1940s beads of rice, a dark brown lizard, perhaps even a green/grey khaki coloured strap - but it's so hard firstly finding nice examples online to see how this colour combination works and secondly finding one in a pesky 17mm size is a challenge too! I've thought about having one bespoke - but again, that cost a lot more, so picking the right colour is even more challenging!

I hope you enjoy looking at the watch, and look forward to any of your suggestions, and perhaps even pictures of your colour combinations that you have on your gold watches!

Thanks as always,

Ollie 😀

Looks good to me on the black strap, but I'm sure it would also look good on a brown strap, or cordovan.

Incidentally, that doesn't look quite like a croc strap to me, more like a lizard print. Also, I think the current strap may be too wide?

Hirsch makes tons of 17mm straps.

Yes you're quite right! Lizard! I'm away with the fairies clearly haha. Possibly an 18mm that's been squashed in.

I do like it, but i wanted something warmer, hence thinking of going down the brown route.

Also unless I’m mistaken I did check the Hirsch website but I could only seem to find 2 17mm ones, one of which was black and one plain dark brown.

Hi OllieOnTheRocks!

Great to see you here and featuring a neato watch!

Here's yellow gold on a brown lizard strap. A '54 Longines automatic with 19AS movement in its American produced case.

On a 1940s watch, I'd be tempted to dispense with any reptilian grain or other patterns and go with muted black or brown leather. Perhaps a strap with the stitching highlighted rolled edges such as seen in this ad.

Hey there!

How are you doing? Thank you for the photos, I’m tempted going the vintage route and having a bespoke one made by Torre straps. He does one similar to that in the advert. Maybe a medium or chocolate brown could be a good choice? They do have a lot of character.

Then I just have to find on of the 1940s EK buckles… in yellow gold

I like to go vintage NOS with special ones. Vintage buckle added and luckily mine came with proper springbars.

Maybe tan will suit gold after all - for some reason I didn't think of that. I like that colour combo on yours! Thank you 😀

Very nice watch.

I like the straps from Accurate Form. They carry a number of brown straps in calfskin and pigskin. They're not too expensive and they stock 17mm. I found this dark brown calfskin strap works pretty well with this 10k Tissot. Certainly more casual in appearance.

If you want to go with a strap similar to the originals (which are very hard to find) here is a choice of NOS original straps which I found on NOS 30 Rg gold chronometres.

Some other references from that era may share the same straps - so you should hunt for a cheaper watch with one of these correct straps as a donor for your grail. Will be a long and expensive route though... good luck!

Is that a blued seconds hand? If so then a very thin very dark blue lizard can look good.
