1920s Art Deco Watch Retailed by Mappin

I have been looking to build a little collection of vintage watches, specifically 1930s and earlier.

I started a while ago with a 1935 Omega T17, and was thinking of bidding on the 1920s Art Deco watch retailed by Mappin shown below.

I wondered if anyone would be kind enough to point out any major problems with the watch and if needed save me from a mistake!

Any help would be most appreciated.

The watch is from an earlier period than my area of expertise, but I see no obvious problems. The 9k gold case would be consistent with the UK at the time, and I would say that the dial is both lovely and likely original.

Maybe the minute hand might be wrong. Seeing the hour hand, the minute should more likely be in a "bréguet" style too.

Thank you, I see you are right - the "bréguet" style hour hand doesn't actually sit well with the minute hand - I wonder which may be wrong though (the hour or minute hand) - I did some searching, looking for an example of the same, but couldn't find anything - there were 'Mappin' equivalents, but not with the same coloured dial @ #12 etc.

I thought the best plan was to look for the most unique element - which is when I noticed the #7 - it has a very distinctive 'flourish' to mirror the #5 opposite, in fact if you look at the #7 upside down the 'flourish' at the bottom make is look almost like a '2' - this did return only a very small number of matches, sadly no 'Mappin' equivalent, but a RWC Unicorn, 1919 Omega Banana cal. 23.7S ref. AR727AL, 1918 Tissot and a 'no name' that is also rather handsome lookin did pop up!

Looking at the other numbers on the dial, I would say the 'Mappin', Tissot and Rolex are the same dial, the 'no name' and Omega seem to match each other but not these - that said, there is something about the RWC dial that doesn't sit well, it looks as though it's been cut to fit the case and is as a result rather inelegant versus the others.

None have the red coloured #12, and only the 'no name' has the "bréguet" style hour hand, with the minute hand most closely resembling the Omega ...............

Not sure where this leaves things, but it is interesting to find no match but some very close cousins!

You could maybe have an answer if you point the minute hand to the "12" black mark. If the tip of the hand is too much over or under the mark, then it shouldn't be the right size. I don't know why but it happens quite often to have a mismatched minute hand, even in watches where everything else is genuine (I have 2 of those right now in my collection). Also in the "cousins" you found, the Omega has a wrong minute hand.

Have you seen pictures of the movement btw ? I personally would never put too much money without seeing this essential feature...

Sadly it is being sold at auction, but a smaller auction house I know well and trust - it is in working order but there wouldn't really be a way for me to obtain images of the movement unfortunately, so it would indeed be a bit of a punt!

Unfortunately the particular model not depicted here:

Interesting picture - the watch I am looking at is stamped 4563 on the reverse of the casing, so it may be an earlier model than these as these are all in the high 5,000's - also has a bit of an older look to it.
