18K Rail Dial Connie! Looks alright?

Hey everyone,

I've been looking for a nice pie pan Connie recently, but this rail dial is quite nice imo. Not perfect, but the price is quite friendly at 2500€, I assume with a little haggling room. Haven't seen pictures of internals yet, but I wanted to post here to get the advice of some experts regarding case condition etc. Dial looks untanpered which is good, and doesn't seem TOO bad for a rail dial. Signs of (lots of) polishing, but no dings, so 2000€ seems like an alright price depending on internals?

Thanks for the advise as always 😀 I would appreciate any opinions.

Dom

The case is overpolished.

You mention that the case is polished and seem happy to with that, but it's *really* bad. just compare with the one shown to you in the FS. that was the same case at one point. It's not uncommon to find watches which have been lightly polished at one point or another, but here, what's left?

Also I don't find the dial attractive. there ought to be a tone/mirror difference between the different parts and the 'rail' itself, which isn't present.

Normally, you would be best of asking for pictures in daylight to better judge the dial (which, on a hunch, I am going to call at the very least cleaned), but I wouldn't bother with this one.

If you don't want to spend the money for a gold connie in nice condition and have to make compromises, go for a gold-capped one (or the steel one in the thread - which is really nice btw); but please please please don't compromise on case and dial quality, as you will regret it big time.

Hope this makes sense, happy hunting.

Thanks I appreciate the honest appraisal, and it does make sense. I know the case is overpolished, but I've been looking for a while now without much luck... I'm just being impatient when stuff like this starts looking good - thanks for bringing me back to earth.

I see some beautiful pieces and get told that I should be paying half the asking price for them. Realistically, I'm happy to head up to the ballpark of around 4000€. Maybe I need to stop listening to valuations from OF and follow my heart 😜

I'm sure you have been given plenty of good advice and I'll just add one piece more. The pain of paying too much for a fine example wears away pretty quickly. The pain of looking at a poor example regardless of the economy is acute every time you look at the watch.

The case on the watch you show looks like an old piece of soap and should really be discarded as a potential purchase immediately, you almost guaranteed end up regretting it later.

How long have you been looking for? Some of us wait for years, maybe even decades, for a specific reference to pop up with the perfect condition/price ratio, then you have to commit fast of course. Others just buy what they like when they like. What's important with either strategy is that condition should be the most important factor.

It's been said a thousand times here before that it's better to overpay for an excellent specimen, the price will long be forgotten whilst the enjoyment shall last. Buying a poor example cheap might scratch the itch short term but before you know it you'll be back on the hunt for the same watch in better shape.

And if you then eventualy do find that better watch, it will be much more difficult to sell your ‘bar of soap’ on.

Whilst I agree with the sentiment of your post; for accuracy, the rail track under discussion is housed in the 14381case, as opposed to the 2852 offered by Eve

The 2852 for sale is a fine specimen indeed, and for me generally a more attractive reference than the 14381
