I bought one because it was from the year I graduated from the Naval Academy. Some people think that the triple 000's limited run makes it more collectible, but the fact that it has a gloss dial with gold outlined lame plots and a sapphire crystal make it more like the newer sub and less vintage, and therefor not a premium price.

Depends how much you buy it for.
Can't you think of any better questions?

I've seen better deals and as other posters pointed out not as desirable. If you like it...buy it. Similar watch, but why not a 16800 matte dial? Also a limited run, but currently considered more collectable, and value buys can still be had on this ref...

I think Matt 16800 could be a better investment and better looking watch than 168000.

I totally agree not many transitional ones around defo matt Dial a winner. Although the white 1680 not rocketed in price like some others at that age 1665. 5513,

matte 16800 is the way to go. a true transitional watch and still seriously undervalued imo. they were only made for a few years and many of the matte dials were replaced with WG surround dials during servicing by Rolex. this reference also seems to develop some amazing patina. if your budget is stretched a bit, you can find one. here's mine, good luck!

not a blue bezel but the original black bezel that has faded. in certain light it looks black, while in others it looks blue. the sun really brings out the blue! the pearl is also original but has turned amber. here is one with a similar effect:

I agree with the 16800 matte dial recommendation, however, prices have been moving up more than a little during the past year.

The price on 16800 is not that much behind 1680. So why not go for 1680 with the acrylic. You can even replace it with the doom crystal.

    Hi,

The 16800 matte is still a steal when compared with other vintage sports models. You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between a glossy 16800, 168000 and early 16610. The 168000 was hyped up at one point but it came back down to earth. I wouldn't pay a premium for one. It should be priced very slightly above a decent 16610.

As far as collector interest, most Rolex sports models pre 6 digit reference, mark my words, will become collectible at one point in time. Just some more desirable than others. Even the 16610 has spiked up in price in the past year or so.

    Cheers

to be fair, there are much much less around than a White 1680. the matte dials were only produced a few years and many that went in for service had their matte dials replaced with service dials with WG surrounds.

I could be wrong. I just remember seeing 16800 sold for around 5-6k recently. If 16800 is much much less than 1680, then I would probably pick 16800. By the way, your 16800 is gorgeous.
