Invested bidders? Premium for what was described as a one-owner piece?

Fair, over stated. Still, has to be a factor when assessing the price.

~$300 for 2x516 ~$600 for 1039 would be ~$5800 for head. Maybe it's the AML, let's start factoring an extra ~$600 for the shiny O. :D

I put in a couple bids in the last 10 seconds when it was at $4,500; neither registered, as by the time they went through they were much lower then other bids that came in. It jumped $2,200 in those last few seconds.

But if speedmaster101 pricing is 8k collector and 5800 good, wouldn't this fall somewhere in that range?

How would you have rated the piece condition-wise?

I would have priced it as good. But extra for the bracelet. I would also factor in a service!

Very happy I got my 68 before these prices!

It's high, but everything speedmaster related is right now.

The dial and hands look nice, complete with original lume. The case appears unpolished. The bezel is very good and the watch comes with the muck and grime people (me included) associate with a watch that hasnt been messed with.

These are the examples that people want and they come up less than they did even a year or two ago.

I did see that one, true. I've heard that UK sales can sometimes bring higher prices though since there's a lot of demand in the UK, but not a lot of willingness to pay import duties?

I was watching this one very attentively, and I agree that it deserved a good finish with the bracelet, everything looking good, intact, and untouched, but I was surprised to see it above $6k. My guess was that it would go for about $5700 given the muck and the okay photos. But with that, I'm now kicking myself for not buying a transitional last summer when I had the chance (though I'm happy with what I was able to find/buy) and now I fear they may continue to climb out of reach. I mean, at these prices, I might as well look for 321's.

So, Speedy's obviously have a lot of momentum from the Christie's auction and the increased attention they received last year, the question in my mind is if this will cool off or just keep climbing? Even if they cool, the new pricing standards will be higher than a year or even 6 months ago, but at this pace I'll have to start collecting invictas.

I was also watching very attentively and had reached out to the seller. He was unsure of the value and wanted to let the auction determine the price, but asked my opinion since I'd said I collected Speedies. I told him that I thought it would be in the mid-$5K range...partially to leave some cushion for myself if he decided to sell outright, but also because as of a couple months ago, transitionals weren't selling for above $5K even in good condition. It's truly a new world post-Christie's, and I'm glad to have snagged one for cheap before they rose.

Now - the question about where prices go...the '68 transitionals are really special, IMO. They exist in small numbers relative to the pro 321's and the regular 145.022's and make for the perfect daily wearer due to the 145.012 aesthetics paired with the more modern 861 cal. This is a case where some might say "you absolutely CANNOT pay more for an 861 than a 321 Pro," but I'm not sure I agree. Regardless of whether prices continue rising or not, I think the mid-$5K to $6K range for good examples will likely be the range in which they stay. My guess would be that most owners also don't want to sell. I wear mine a lot and wouldn't sell it no matter what the market did.

    Just my two cents.

    I'm sure glad I didn't sell mine.
