Yes This is a great photo, I was hoping there might be a slightly better one or a different angle.

The "Hidden Gems" thread is a treasure trove. This photo of Aldrin from p.1 from that thread suggests that at least one of his watches had a spear chrono hand...

Spear chrono isn’t definitive though. 145.012s has both. My -68 has a spear.

Yep, absolutely true. In general, that is. I haven't seen your -68 😀

... However, we've drifted again, so for those who don't like to read whole threads, I feel like I should reiterate: the question of which reference Aldrin wore is independent of the question that initially motivated this thread, which is: did the moon walkers on the Apollo 14 mission wear 145012s. Given the evidence we have right now, I believe the answer to that question is likely to be yes.

To be fair I don’t think we have drifted all that far, if indeed at all. The title of the thread asks whether the 145.012 got to the surface of moon therefore the variant Aldrin was wearing is of very great relevance! I will however shut up about it now.

Thank you for that excellent photo. Still annoyingly inconclusive but having played around with the photo a bit my money is on 145.012. I hope I haven't too much thread drift here.

Please don't, it's discussions like this that keep me coming back to OF. It's all good fun. 👍

Indeed. Spear chrono could be either reference. However, the square end chrono and tall pushers of the Apollo 14 crew's watches? Now that's a bit more suggestive.

I'd like to think that it was due to the need to use the pushers with pressure suit gloved hands that led to the increase in pusher height by Omega...

@WurstEver
Here's another close up of Aldrin's Omega Speedmaster chronograph taken during that pre-mission press briefing
.

Here's the video: https://archive.org/details/VJSC_1425A
.
An important remark: watches worn during pre-mission activities and countdown tests aren't necessarily the watches worn during the actual mission (e.g. Skylab crews trained with 105.003 Speedies but wore later versions during the actual mission).
Pre-mission WSS - White Space Suit activities can be identified by the fact the astronauts are not wearing the beta cloth mission patch...
There're only 4 good Apollo 11 suit-up photos showing Aldrin & Armstrong, I'll come back to that in Hidden gems NASA topic...
