Greetings: I have an old Omega that belonged to J. Houbolt the designer of the Lunar landing module or LEM. That was the first landing craft on the moon. Dr. Houbolt was a neighbor and his nephew has been my closest friend since children and I’m old. As you can see by the date calendar it was probably last worn in 1974. He was very attentive to details and knowing him he would have changed the calendar. He worked along side of Werner Von Braun however he was smarter than Von Braun. There are you tube videos explaining how Houbolt had a “crazy idea” of the first way to get a man on the lunar surface. He almost got fired for pushing his idea but in the end Von Braun stood up and said that his own massive rocket plan that was supposed to land on the moon wouldn’t work and that the only way to get a man on the moons surface was Houbolt’s Lunar rendezvous and landing module plan. And it did work. They had a big parade for him when he came home. He’s sort of a forgotten or overlooked hero. He was my hero and a very cool man. He passed away some time ago. This watch was with some other things he had in a box.
I’m just curious about this watch. I love omega and have a few including a very old Speedmaster with a Nasa band and some other hand engraved markings that appear to be military or government numbers. It also is inscribed on the Back. “Nasa L. 15. 1967.” thank you fir any input. I know better to not wind this watch. I can’t imagine if this watch could talk. I’m pretty sure it’s what he wore and perhaps used while doing calculations for his “crazy ideas” That changed history.

Thank you, Arlan

@Uncleasy , very interesting background and thanks for sharing. Dr. Houbolt's design likely made the landings possible and certainly saved the Apollo 13 crew. He is getting his due credit more now.

Can you send a picture of the back of the case?

You should get good information here from others. My limited knowledge makes me think this is an early Seamaster. The provenance is fantastic and the calendar super cool.

You may already know this but should you decide to service it ( a good idea) make clear instructions to not polish or try to shine up the case. I am sure you know this but it is worth mentioning.

Congratulations on a beautiful watch from history and thanks for sharing.

Edit: from the web

Omega Seamaster Chronograph ref 143.646 calibre 321 circa 1959

Yours has earlier pushers so is an earlier watch. But because it is similar it makes me think Seamaster.

Update. Not a Seamaster. An early chronograph, probably pre-seamaster due to the pushers.

Here are a couple pictures, one with different hands and one similar hands but two registers

They have similar raised Omego logo and don't say Seamaster, with same rectangular pushers.

Also, maybe you should contact Omega. It's a significant watch and they may be interested in purchasing it in the event that you or your family decide to pass it on. Lastly, maybe don't service it or talk to a conservator first.

Pretty cool.

Ps. What else was in the box this watch came from?

Does this look like the same watch John had at the time of this Langley photo to you? Nice work with Resalution enhancement!
Thank you. Arlan

I just got off the phone with Johns nephew.
He’s bringing other related items and more watches that belonged to John and John’s brother who was my friends father. Apparently they must have collaborated on watch’s. Mostly all omegas. There is a museum in Joliet Illinois where we grew up that honors Johns achievements.

Thanks to everyone here for the insights on this watch. I’ll be posting more pictures this weekend.
