Hi gang, I happen to love the 116508, I am being proposed one at around $57k. I am told it is almost impossible to grab at an AD at “civilized” pricing. I would like your opinion. Should I try my luck and be patient waiting for it at my AD boutique? Should I grab it because it might continue to go up in price and if I want it I will only do up paying more for it? In your opinion will this craze go on? I find it appealing on pictures but never got the chance to see one in person. Those who have seen it or better own it, how much do you like it? My more reasonable purchase would be the 116508 with the black dial with black gold circle registers. It seems more versatile and classic. It does not seem to get much love, but I find it interesting as well. It is quite less expensive however. That is a lot of questions, maybe with your help I can sort all of this out. which one do you prefer? Thank you in advance for your inputs.
You would have bought it already if you really wanted it Since you are asking us, I think you know the answer I think it’s a cool watch mainly because I’m an Aussie (green and gold). I don’t think these will keep rising in price, but you surely won’t get one from an AD if you don’t have a track record from purchasing from the AD.
I have a solid track record, but not sure if it is solid enough. And your wisdom is right 55k is a tough cookie that stopped me, but I am having second thoughts.
$57,000? That's one helluva lot of money for a watch imo, unless you're a serious collector after one particular watch and have the funds. Still, if you can afford it and really want it then buy it! Why not? You wouldn't even get a new Porsche Cayenne for that money! Life can be very short, especially in these times. And I wouldn't bother waiting for one from an AD, as you probably won't ever get one that way. Good luck!
Of all the watches I could drop the thick end of 60k on, those two would not be the ones. Especially at 2x retail. They just don’t look right. If I wanted a precious metal Daytona I’d be looking at a white gold or platinum model instead. If it simply had to be yellow gold I’d be looking at a Day-Date with one of the black/silver textured dials. These are lovely and would be my first choice for a yellow gold watch. If I really wanted a yellow gold chronograph I’d be looking for a Speedmaster.
Both outstanding watches... Little advantage for the 116508, that green dial look really nice. My personal choice would go for vintage (dayto) with that kind of money, or a (vintage over new) gold speedmaster... Especially if I had already started collecting Speedmasters LE
Your advices are wise, and confort me in the way I think. I do dream of a yellow gold daytona. It is a kids dream. i guess it will be authorized dealer price or nothing. It does not make sense to go so far above retail. if I can catch the green I will, but there is a higher probability it will be the less asked for black dial, (that I really like as well). Which way would you go green or black dial, if both were available?
I was presented the opportunity on this beautiful Apollo 11 50th, but passed to be able to afford the Daytona. If I could get both I surely would.
At 55k I’d go for a second hand Platona. That is one great looking watch and has more intrinsic value.
Watches are irrational purchases, we really can't tell you whether you should, or should not, buy any particular watch. There are a LOT of watches in that price range that you could look at.
The prices of these on secondary market have sky rocketed here in Europe. Putting one out of my reach. It is a great looking watch indeed.
So true. But it is nice to exchange thoughts and get a feeling of others tastes and approaches. Sometimes it is a mystery to me why some models get so much love and others sleep in the shade.
over 50Gs for a watch I haven't seen in the flesh... nope. actual... over 1G for a watch I haven't held in my hand is a stretch.
I fully agree on the Platona. However, gold/platinum prices switched a couple of years ago. Even 18ct is now worth substantially more than platinum.
