114270 Explorer Recently Serviced But Way Outside COSC / SC Specs

Hi guys, need some advice here. I've just bought an 114270 from 2002 off eBay, full set with box and papers. Got it for a good price and on top of that it has been recently serviced (April 2017) by Luxury Watch Repairs in Hatton Garden, London. Overall very happy with it, but after setting it exactly yesterday I see that it has gained 9-10 seconds in 24 hours. Obviously this isn't within COSC tolerances, never mind the Rolex "superlative" +/-2s per day. The watch has a 2 year warranty from the service, so should I be returning it to them and demanding that they recalibrate it? If so, should I be saying that it has to be back within Rolex specs? Any advise appreciated..

Yes, I'm sure they would do that for you as part of the service warranty.

Yes, I’m sure they would.

I assume it wasn’t Rolex that serviced the watch then? It happened to me at rsc st james’ and they re-regulated for me.

Always better to ask politely before demanding anything. 😉

Indeed a better way to go about it.👍
Warranty's are usually transferrable. So even though the warranty is on the previous owners name they'll still fix it for you.
And yes, within Rolex tolerances. Nothing less or more.

Sorry, yes - obviously "demand" is the wrong word.. 😀 What I really meant was should I be insistant if they were to try to fob me off. But as it's a Rolex, should it be getting regulated to +/-2?

A 2002 Rolex is just COSC it appears barely out. Have you tried a different resting position?

It hasn't been resting at all. Been on the wrist since I got it. Are you saying that in 2002 the "SC" designation was no more stringent than COSC?

Fully wind the watch, set it to an atomic clock and check it over a week.
If it's out and it has been recently serviced then it probably just needs a quick regulation.
The key though is fully winding it. Also how are you laying it down at night? Dial up, crown down or up on its side?

I don't take any watch off at night, but I've given it a full wind and I'll see where it is by Sunday. Cheers.

Yes and no. The movements are sent out to get the COSC cert, then the pre 2016 definition was once returned to Rolex and cased they were water checked and retested to still be in spec to earn the superlative name. AFAIK the recheck was not more stringent then COSC at that time. Rolex uses some smoke and mirrors mixed with hyperbole in this.

Currently they claim thier -2/+2 is more accurate then Omegas 0/+5. It is and it isn’t. Technically they cover the same time range but it’s closer to perfect time and hence more “accurate.” As a watch owner I prefer the 2 second offset to running fast as if your really anal about the time on a watch it’s easier to set a watch slightly fast then slightly slow.

OK, I gave it a full wind yesterday, not taken it off and it's gained 19s in 24 hours. Not good.

Can we answer a basic question here. I asked it, but it’s not been answered.

Did it get serviced by Rolex?

If not, then you are at the mercy of the non-Rolex service centre.

If it was - take it back and they will do it for you within a couple of days (having been serviced they will prioritise).

My view - if not serviced my Rolex try to get the others to rectify. If they can’t send it on to RSC who will do it at a cost obvs.

Actually, in the OP I did say I'd just bought it and that it was serviced last April by Luxury Watch Repairs. https://luxurywatchrepairs.com I don't think they're an Authorised Rolex Service Centre. This was the previous owner who got the service. I've got the receipt etc. The point of this post was to try to establish if, under the warranty they provided, the onus is on them to put it right at no cost to me. Obviously I could take it to my local AD in Belfast and get them to do it, but I'd have to pay for it.

Sorry, I must have missed that. I think they would probably look at it for you on the basis they serviced it. Personally I wouldn’t take a Rolex anywhere bar RSC but I am sure if you are nice about it they’ll regulate it for you.

In a few years maybe put it into Rolex again.

Best of luck...

I had my 114270 serviced by Duncan at Genesis watchmaking at the beggining of the year and i have to say it he provided a fantastic service and my watch now runs at +5 seconds month!.... yes you read that right... +5 seconds a month not per day or week.
He now has my 16710 for service and I would expect that to run as well when I get it back. His prices are a little better than RSC too.

Expect to be disappointed.
