This was the first of the day, and with an estimate of £800-£1200 I'd imagine this drew a lot of interest.

Sold by Golding Young & Mawer - https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/...0328/lot-02c53519-382b-48bb-9409-a6bb00996656

It opened at £3500 and quickly shot to £7k... then an internet bidder and a phone bidder between them piushed it to a final price of £8,000 plus 22.5% commission.

The vintage Speedmaster market is not a place for us ;)mere mortals.

With your vast knowledge, any reason why this went so high when it doesn't seem to be a great example ? I guess the dial is nice and seems to have a "chocolate" tinge to it but I didn't like the "scars". I'm only watching as someone with a lot less money and just learning the tricky art of deciphering what should be there or not !

Oh you sweet talker you! ::shy::

My knowledge of these really goes no further than I like them quite a lot.

As a non runner, according to @Spacefruit rather excellent guide, this should have been somewhere in the region of $4500 for the head only.

    http://speedmaster101.com/price-chart-2/

With the bracelet, and comission taken into account, this still seems high.

On a personal level, I don't find this onc particularly attractive, those scars/dial repairs just don't do it for me... but to each their own.

Either way, this was about £8k out of my budget! ;)

Listening to the Audio, the auctioneer kept referencing multiple bidders in China... so maybe we're seeing the effect of international bidders going after lots they really want? Or local availability is low, and desire to own is high?

Without talking to whoever was bidding in the later stages, it's hard to tell what the motivation may have been. ;)

Sorry, didn't see that thread! ::facepalm1::

GBP 10K for a non-running, tropical Sharpie dial seems a bit steep?

    Regarding the other thread -

I tried to ask about dial on the QT so I wasn't in danger of being thought of as an auction grass !!

Safari wouldn't give me audio so was just watching it race away, interesting to hear about China bids. Guess that's the problem now that the Sterling is down, opens it up to the outside world . Then again still seems to be way over the mark after reading and dissecting @Spacefruit excellent guide as you say.

I suspect it is the serial number 24xxxxxx which is nearer to that of Neil's.

Not sure what effect that has on pricing?

$9960 without the commission... I'm not sure what the bracelet is worth, but there does seem to be a bit of a divide between guide and sale price. Could be straight up bidding fever! ;)

Ok this watch is not easy to slot into the chart.

    It's brown.
    Dial has terrible damage/mark
    It looks honest.
    It appears original.
Case is beaten and chipped but not too polished - the case back bevel is complete.

So it's all about the dial. My guess is that the buyer thinks that mark is removable.

Hong Kong IP addresses (Where I guess those "Chinese" bids came from) often show up as China. Because , according to the Chinese, it is.

Well if this is this morning's discussion, let's see what this afternoon brings........

    House re-mortgage I suspect.

    Quite.

If the same people are interested, I think it could see £12k plus commission - it's much nicer than this morning's lot.

The dial would be really nice if not for those terrible marks, why would anybody do such a thing? Doubtful if they would come off? Spear Chrono hand would look a lot better too.

GBP 12K probably isn't outlandish since the arse fell out of the Pound.

I'd be very surprised if this doesn't go over £10K, but even more so if it stays in the UK.

I'm just going to go out into the park across the road, without my phone or laptop, and read a book this afternoon...

Completely agree. US$12.5K wouldn't be bad for a nice one like that.
