I am sure we have all seen this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Omega-Speed...169320?hash=item1c63d7c4e8:g:jXsAAOSwI3RW8y0UPurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network So all sorts of little issues, that together make me nervous. (Apart from the degradation of the dial, and the damage on the subdial, the sledgehammer bezel) The hands are incorrect, but also it is marked 105.003-65 inside the case back, and has a serial 2408xxxx. I have only seen this range in -64's, in both references 105.012 and 105.003. I have observed that 105.003-65's start at 2282xxxx. I realize I am being a total Anorak here, but I ask does anyone have a -65 with a serial this low? The thing is, this serial is close, but to does not fit my observations as being correct. Its such a small difference, but it does not fit my observations of a -64. I wonder was Omega really that careless to bung in a movement out of order like this? Its close, but its wrong. And if its wrong, then its not original. If its not original, is it worth $9000? The incorrect hands are a flag, that someone worked on it who either did not care, or did not know they were incorrect. And does the space connection add some value? It is pretty tenuous.
There was an earlier thread on this one https://omegaforums.net/threads/105-003-listing-for-sale.37524/ However, there were so many obvious peculiarities that we totally skipped over the movement number issue, which is very real. It think SF is absolutely correct that this 105.003-65's movement of 2208xxx is very much in 1964 territory. Here's what I have 105.003-64 228240xx 105.003-64. 228254xx 105.003-65 228258xx
Some discussion of that one here: https://omegaforums.net/threads/105-003-listing-for-sale.37524/ Including that the same watch sold here for $5700 , year ago and some great comments from TLIGUY about the space connection (or lack of).
Just found one on Chrono24 - 65 with 2262xxx serial. Not as low as the one above, but does throw into question the low observed serials http://www.chrono24.com/en/omega/speedmaster-105003-65-straight-lugs--id4153454.htm
Definitely. Could be a shady dealer... Hands are suspect with the minute hand tip discoloration and case back could have been replaced, but it looks like it's in similar condition to the case... So... Anyone want to get an extract of the archives just to be sure?
An extract won't tell you which case reference. It will just say that it's a 105.003 and probably delivered somewhere in 1965, so still not very conclusive.
