It would have been cool if you could rate any message someone posted from 1-5 stars (but only you can see what you rated), and his average would appear instead of likes in the form of stars.
Kind of like if every user had a yelp page :p

This is actually a very interesting idea, to be honest. I think it’d encourage good, healthy conversation and keep threads/comments on topic, but filter out the excess trolls, memes, or thread-derailers.

On the other hand, if someone doesn’t get along with another member (or not a fan of them) and goes around to “dislikes” all their comments, then that’s a problem..

That would be fun - I’m not keen on sub-dials, moonphases, and other irritants too numerous to mention. I’m sure I could exceed my 'likes' very easily - like shooting fish in a barrel :)

On a more serious note, and in response to the initial theme of the thread, I’ve always assumed that when the OF founding fathers introduced the 'like' button it was to enable members of this hobby forum to acknowledge a nice or unusual watch, an interesting post or just a great photo.

I’ve never thought that there was any restriction on what I shouldn’t 'like' nor any additional criteria that I should adopt. Of course, all forums have their grinches but OF members and posters are generally polite, helpful and erudite and although some of us include the odd background dog (or other pet) the overall focus remains on watch collecting.

Come on, who forgets the commandments :)

1 Whatever goes upon post or like farming is an enemy.
2 Whatever goes upon watches, or accessories , is a friend.

I remember a couple people used the like button as a way to enter the watch giveaways a number of you did during the covid lockdown giveaway. I think a couple people complained about like farming although that could have been in jest but I think that was quite fair and a positive way to acquire likes.

there are definitely a number of us who like our pets a lot. In the “pet owners” thread there are a number of people, myself included, who have the odd habit of posting regular pics of our pets. On occasion that will spill over to the regular threads but I try to limit it. I try to be liberal with likes, I have read they stimulate endorphins and what not which has lead to some complaints of Facebook being addictive as people seek likes. I don’t personally use Facebook nor do I count my likes here but if I can contribute to someone’s addiction I’m always happy to do so. I will try to contain myself for posting pictures of my cat hairy for a while and I apologize if hairy had bothered anyone.
