I think thats people creating MINT speedies (out of non-mint ones).

makes sense to pay 3k if you later can charge 5k more ...

Is a put-together with nice component parts, that is all correct by the book the same as a Franken? How would you know if not disclosed?

Well it was quite a good dial.

I see the speedmaster market as moving from a collectors one to an immature investors one, although nearing the end of that period as there are now people who can differentiate between a $4000 dial and a $2000 dial. And remember it only takes two people in an auction. And so we are moving into a period where people are buying them both to enjoy, but also justifying it (to themselves, wives, bank managers) as an investment.

It is possible the buyer pressed the ohfuckitt! Button and overpaid. In this market, overpaying is the difference between owning and moaning.

It takes skill and experience to differentiate the quality in anything, when you cannot put comparisons side by side.

This dial was fine. Not top, but fine. A little better than the recently whole watch used in the example above. I would say a better dial might even sell for more.

The price difference between a 80% watch and a 90% watch is increasing. I think already the 95%+ watches are not coming to open market.

Straight lug speedmasters have moved from being an enthusiasts watch to being a medium of wealth concentration - just as the Rolex Daytona has.

@ulackfocus has a point, in that for some these are more like bitcoins than items to enjoy.

Before we get too carried away by this $4,000 EW dial price, I notice that the buyer had a zero eBay rating. Quite a purchase for a first time ebayer. I wonder if we will see this dial again.

Spacefruit is 100% dead on accurate. When an item stops being used for it's intended purpose because it's become too valuable to risk wear & tear because that would affect the resale value, it's no longer something for hobbyists but rather something for investment.

To me, a watch locked away in a safe is a crime against horology.

    So do I.

Well, as distinctive as these dials and bezels can be, the eagle eyes around here will probably recognize them when they resurface. Of course work can be done.

As to whether it matters, correct but possibly non-original parts get scrutinized to no end around here. Ultimately the buyer will decide but it could be a bargaining chip or at very least food for fodder for ΩF hyperanalysis.
