Let's see more! Here's some: Decent watch but for $29,000? http://www.ebay.com/itm/VTG-RARE-19...130246041?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item27d8285399Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
Considering almost nothing on this 145-0012 is original, $4500 seems....optimistic: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vtg-1966-OM...177412108?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item41777ad20cPurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
Yes, some sellers seem to think having the retailers name on the dial adds some rare value and provenance.
OR this example. Maybe the price reflects the unique script used on the dial... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Authentic-O...228261191?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item2a320bcf47Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
I think part of it is people find a vintage Omega from 50 years ago that still works and think, well Omega's are expensive watches today, this vintage one most be one of only a handful of surviving watches from that era. Or similarly get info along those lines from the corner jewellery store battery-changer. I had an experience with a guy that owned a Rolex "Star" pocket watch (gold filled) with box who thought he was going to buy his family a new car with the proceeds.
Gold watches and Ladies watches are also among the wishful thinking favorites. This all gold lady watch usually sell for less than USD 1,500.......... offered for USD 10K http://www.ebay.com.sg/itm/Omega-18...hes&hash=item338561029b&_uhb=1#ht_1176wt_1136Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network (well at least he is open to Dennis offer)
A refinished dial gold TDMP for GBP 6250: http://www.ebay.com.sg/itm/STUNNING...s_GL&hash=item27d8a7b7f3&_uhb=1#ht_1793wt_903Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
Another ladies gold watch: ladies - thin - quartz - out of date square model only for USD 13,000: http://www.ebay.com.sg/itm/OMEGA-18...ches&hash=item56448dfb4b&_uhb=1#ht_8627wt_992Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
It does. At least, I like 'em. And if you look toward Patek auctions for guidance, the retailers name does add value, rarity, and provenance.
Been on the 'bay for as long as I can remember, still at original BIN http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/omega-de...6563?pt=AU_Watches&hash=item3a855de5c3&_uhb=1Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
Not an Omega, but still... this puppy, complete with the pawnbroker's envelope in shot, has been on the 'Bay forever. He finally eased the price down from some USD$500, but still way too expensive. And the photography is top. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MANS-VINT...913193307?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item19d2f1055bPurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
On most of these, clearly the buyers are a bit silly, especially when the numbers are astronomical. On a few others, typically where the price is, say, double the value of the watch, I think there is actually some strategy involved at times. I think these webs catch a few flies, who make an apparent lowball offer that gets accepted.
This chap's prices are always typically twice what anyone else would ask. And almost all his dials are refinished as a matter of course. But he seems to sell his stuff quite steadily (he has his own internet shop as well as his eBay listings).
I think there's a message in this: 'we' - the folks on this forum - have varying degrees of knowledge and vast amount of passion. But the general public out there just want to buy a watch, maybe even a cool watch, no knowledge or expertise needed. If not, would the multi-coloured dials of India and Orange County or the fantasy dials of the Ukraine continue to sell? I think most of us here can smell a dog, but perhaps 'outsiders' can't. Caveat emptor, I'm afraid.
