Up for sale is this rare vintage early 1960s IWC Automatic Date in stainless steel 3-piece case with original double-signed Türler pie pan dial. This elegant timepiece from International Watch Co. of Schaffhausen features the classic Pellaton-winding auto caliber 8531 under the hood, which has recently been fully overhauled by my NYC Master Watchmaker. It is in overall Excellent original condition with a gorgeous Near Mint silver sunburst dial and comes with a 6-month movement warranty for all normal non-abusive use. Türler is somewhat like the Tiffany's or Wempe of Switzerland, with a 130-year heritage selling watches and jewelry in the heart of Zürich. CASE & BACK: Classic and beautifully proportioned gent's dress size, 34mm wide (not including crown) by 42mm long all-stainless steel 3-piece case with long, straight downward sloping lugs, narrow press on bezel and hermetic push-in back. The case has just been lightly detailed by my watchmaker to restore the correct polished lug tops and bezel and satin finished sides and still maintains crisp edges and angles. There are some very minor residual scuffs & scratches but the case and bezel are easily in Excellent vintage condition. The snap-in caseback is in Excellent+ condition with only some very small scratches/marks near the opening indent. The inner case and back lip show negligible corrosion at their contact points. All correct IWC nomenclature of the period and full 1.59 million serial number are present inside the caseback. DIAL & HANDS: Lovely bright silver sunburst pie pan dial with applied rhodium plated bar markers and characteristically inset date frame is all-original and Near Mint and stunning with only one minor mark between "11" & "12" and some subtle, even spotting to the original finish. All the original factory printing is crisp and legible including the rare store-added Türler. Luminous-filled Stick-style rhodium plated hour and minute hands are Excellent with minor signs of aging, as is the sweep seconds. All in all, a really beautiful and rare original dial with classic elegance that "wears big" due to the large face. MOVEMENT: In-house Caliber 8531 21-jewel full rotor movement with date complication and patented Pellaton automatic winding system with its distinctive smooth ratcheting sound, as well as shock protection. The 1.61 million movement serial dates to circa 1961 with the actual delivery based on the case serial as late as 1963 according to the excellent "Date Your IWC" program by Marco Schönenberger. This is the second date iteration of Alfred Pellaton's engineering masterpiece, which many consider one of the best mass-produced families of automatics ever manufactured. It was recently fully overhauled by my watchmaker. Therefore it is keeping very good time with strong power reserve and proper date change and is guaranteed for 6-months of normal, non-abusive use. As you may know, vintage IWC parts are extremely difficult to source on the secondary market and one usually has to send the watch to Schaffhausen for a very expensive service where they will in all likelihood replace the Tritium or Radium dial with a repainted modern Luminova one. So having the movement freshly lubricated and overhauled will save you a lot of headaches, as well as big bucks! CROWN: Early and correct water resistant push-in steel "Fish" crown shows some light wear, Excellent condition. The crown pushes in tightly to the case, winds the movement and pulls out to the non-hack time setting position exactly as it should. CRYSTAL: Older low dome acrylic crystal is clean and shows no cracks or chips but only some minor residual scratches from the years, Excellent condition. BAND: This great IWC comes on a nearly new Near Mint genuine blue genuine alligator strap with generic steel buckle. This watch takes 18mm straps.
